vince
Hey George Check your inbox for a couple of my messages. Found a couple of interesting sites that review the Lowrance H2O as well as a number of the Garmin units ( GPS Map 60C and LegendC ). For those of you that are interested the sites are: gpsinformation.net as well as gpsnuts.com Both sites are pretty good in the review process but I now need to find a site or two that has reviewed the Garmin Maps and the Lowrance maps. Can't seem to find any so if any of you have - please post. Vince

Okay Vince, you can view all the map datum on the Garmin Maps here: http://www.garmin.com/cartography/ How to make your own maps for Garmin units (try doing that with any of the others): http://www.ucalgary.ca/~clarko/garminmaps/ And here are the reviews: http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/GPS/4502-3490...tml?tag=dir.gps (ZDnet) http://www.backpackgeartest.org/reviews/Na..._Review_Toby_K/ My Baby: http://gpsinformation.us/vistacolor/etrexvistacolor.html (Full Indepth Review) *** If you got the bucks.. like I told Al go for this one: http://ai.pricegrabber.com/product_images/...3464214_125.jpg And I know Wally bought this one, which is even better. http://audiovisual.kelkoo.co.uk/b/a/ps_106.../100278823.html Garmin makes the best GPS units out there. Oh yeah what I found on Lowrance Maps: http://www.lowrancecanada.com/FreedomMaps/...canada_topo.htm This site gives side by side comparions, including downloads of the user manuals. I recommend you download a few PDF manuals first and do some reading. I did the same when I bought my new camera as well. The more you know.. the more you owe. Jep, you get what you pay for. http://www.gpsnow.com/
vince
RangerBob Thanks for the info - I had seen a number of them before but a couple I had not and any info is worthwhile. The LengendC is a great unit - no doubt about it. I guess for me, at this time, the Lowrance is more of what I'm looking for - cheaper, good maps - but in fairness it is a grayscale not color. I like the idea of placing more map coverage on the Lowrance ( as the guys at Maptown tell me ) and the guys at Maptown also told me that if you plan to be in tree coverage alot the Garmin 60 , 60C may offer better coverage - they say "may" because there are other factors that come into play. I did play with the LegandC and the Garmin60C at the show and liked them both - the one big advantage of the Legand is it's size and a great screen. I'm going to wait for another week and have a real good look at the maps at the upcoming fishing show. As a side note and maybe you can verify this - the guys at Maptown told me that with 24 meg of space for maps the max topo coverage would be from approx Edmonton south to Red Deer and west to the mountains. He said to get about a half a province you would have to move up to the Garmin 60C with 54 meg . Not sure if that correct or not but thats what he told me. Ah, the sage continues - I just got to go out and buy one - I'm spending way to much time on this - though it is fun. Thanks for your help and the links - it's appreciated. Happy Easter to you Lance. RangerBob
I had a gray scale Etrex Legend before buying this one. Nothing wrong with grayscale... and if you ever want to see my GPS, lemme know I can bring it in to the club and you can compare it with Keiths. Happy hunting. vince
RangerBob That may be a good plan. I'll send you a message if I can get ahold of Keith. I did play around with Keiths last club night and I focused in and around the Edson -Hinton and south to Robb area and found the maps to be real good and very detailed but it would be a help to compare them to the Garmin map. Thanks for the offer - I appreciate it. Vince

vince
Hey George and any one else interested in GPS RangerBob was good enough to have me over to his place to play around with his Garmin LegandC and the Garmin Maps. Got to tell you it is a slick unit and the color screen is a real bonus. Auto route is a nice feature to have as well and in particular the 3D screen view is a beauty. The one thing I can tell you as well is that the info from Maptown was incorrect in that 24 meg actually covers far more area. More than I wil use. Have a look at both and see which one will best suit your needs. On my drive back home from Lance's I think I'm going to stick with a more basic unit - the Lowrance - well I think it's more basic anyway. The only hangup I have at the moment with the Lowrance is the 9 hours of battery time versus about 30 for each of the Garmins. We'll talk more at the club meeting. SnoWolf
Hiya. So I bought a ton of tickets and put most of them into the flyrood bucket and spread the rest out evenly among the rest at the lloyd Shea raffle table. So I did not win the fly rod but I did win the Garmin etrex GPS. Seems to be a handy little machine. Will be nice ounce I learn to use it.
