How about a 'This week at the Club' Forum Topic?

How about it?

Is there some way of letting members know what is happening at the weekly meeting on this forum? For example, is the swap meet this week or next? Is there a presentation? What's the tying demo?

Another idea is to have a draft meeting agenda (sorry DS) so people could bring forward topics, et cetera.

I know we have a calendar, but when I check it's usually blank. I know there is a newsletter, but I usually read that once.

Any thoughts?

Hi Robin,

Thanks for the comments.

Here's my two bits, for what they're worth...

Is there some way of letting members know what is happening at the weekly meeting on this forum? For example, is the swap meet this week or next? Is there a presentation? What's the tying demo?

As stated at the last meeting Jim O'neil had to cancel so it was suggested that we bring our tying geer and have a free tye with the flys being donated for club sponsored events. etc. or those who wish to can just mingle and BS about fishing, that's o.k. too.

Another idea is to have a draft meeting agenda (sorry DS) so people could bring forward topics, et cetera.

It has been my experience (only a year attending meetings) that anyone who wants to bring up topics is allowed to do so at the meetings. One can always call Denis S. or Dave M. for program related ideas/topics ahead of time which is prefered since most meetings are planned ahead of time unless there is a cancelation on short notice.

I know we have a calendar, but when I check it's usually blank. I know there is a newsletter, but I usually read that once.

I find that I forget what was in the newsletter so I have to recheck it (it is posted to the site) a few times each month.

Any thoughts?

Also, Robin, we have been told many times by members that if we get too formal there will be fewer members attending and we have been respecting their wishes as well.

Thanks,

Rainbow.

Rainbow - well spoken and well said.

As one-o-the-web-dudes... I've been lax about the calendar - and Pacres has picked up some of the slack... Often unless things are in the newsletter - they don't make it to the calendar.

If Dave Murray (Wooly ol coot that he is) is willing - we can certainly open a forum for him to post upcoming events that is read ony for everyone else.. If he wants - he gets.

Dave? You want it?

Exactly my point: I probably would have brought my vice and materials to work so I could tie at the club tonight, but b/c there was no reminder posted anywhere, I'm SOL (I'll also accept some responsibility for not recalling tonight's program).

Rainbow, it has been my experience that some people are shy about bringing up topics at a meeting with 30 or more people present. My intent was to have an outlet for the shy ones (myself not included) to have an executive member bring forward a topic or question. Maybe this can be done by PM.

Rainbow, I don't know how you extracted formalized process resulting in lower attendance from my post, but I think you are off base with that comment and totally unaligned with my thoughts. I was just asking for a weekly heads up (this week's meeting as a case in point).

I guess I will put my 2cent in here.

We are trying to make the work load as simple as possible. I think this would be just overloading someone for something that can already be found on the Web page (news letter).

As for more organized agenda I must agree. I have come to the realization that the size and scope of the club is ever changing and some of the whys we have done things need to be changed(i am likily the number one offender) But all that aside this club has alway been based on a laidback atmosphere and as Rainbow said I too believe we would loss members if we got to structured. There is a fine line here and I and the Exce need to find that happy medium. This will be a learn curve.

If anyone wants something on the agenda all one needs to to is contact me or any of the Exce. by email or before t he meeting and its a done deal.

Again my 2cents

Okay,

It is becoming painfully obvious that I have been misunderstood and misquoted.

How come we can't have someone post a canned message that says:

THIS WEEK AT NLFT:

- Pattern Demonstration - SilverHilton ties an Orange Heron

- Don't forget your materials for the material swap!

- We still need volunteers for the Sportsman Show . . . sign up on Wednesday

or

- Presentation - Pacres shows everyone how to use the Magic Tool

- Anybody have any books or videos out?

- Brian will be bringing in the ordered clothing

We are trying to make the work load as simple as possible. I think this would be just overloading someone for something that can already be found on the Web page (news letter).

I don't see how posting 2-3 bullet points about what is going on at the club on a given week would overload someone. I think a 2-3 bullet point heads up is required since the newsletter is static and the presentations, cancellations, and tying demonstrations are dynamic. If someone cancels - yesterday as a case in point - and I go to read the newsletter (hard or soft copy) to find out what the evening's schedule is, it's not going to reflect that, and I'm going to be hooped when I get to the club and most people are tying.

Further, I am NOT asking for Dennis S to put together a more organized agenda and post it on the web. My original post asked for a DRAFT agenda so ppl could preview what was going to be discussed. Again, 2-4 bullet points is all I was suggesting and perhaps I didn't articulate that well enough in my first post.

and as Rainbow said I too believe we would loss members if we got to structured.

Exactly! As Rainbow said, not I. I'm not actively searching for structure, formality, and organization (I work for a huge company and I get a dose of that every morning). All I am looking for is a heads up for the weekly meeting and maybe what the Prez might have on his mind for the troops, nothing more. If that is too formal, structured, and organized, then let's not dance around. Say "No" and move on; it was only a suggestion.

What you are asking for Robin - already exists - if you have time to go though all the forums.

I think we need a weekly program thread - and will create it. All changes / etc and a draft agenda can go there.

Cheers for the suggestion. I think it's a good one.
