His funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 1 at 10AM at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church, 10825 - 97 Street.

OMG!:eek::blink::eek: No! Say it AIN'T So! AND so young too!

I am TRULY SORRY to hear that indeed. I am TRULY GLAD to have met and known one of the TRUE MASTERS! An Alberta expert has been lost!

I have not felt this pain since hearing that Dave Engerbretson, Gary Lafontaine. and Poul Jorgensen left us!!!! Probably more so as this is much closer to home.

In fact, I remember EVER SO CLEARLY when "Jack Dennis & Friends", Gary, Mike, and Jack came to Edmonton to present for us at Grant Mcewan. Jack had just got a new digital video camera from Japan the week before.. and the code in the camera was "literally" all japanese (how new the camera was)... and he could not figure it out. So I offered to record the show for him. I simply pressed the "RED" record button.. and that was it.... my job was done... and well.. the first tyer up was Roman with his RS Quad. The MOST impressive tying show I had EVER been to! Hmmm... now I gotta hunt down Jack for a copy of that video.

Well, just search here for yourself!!!!

And, who could forget this AWESOME resource published in Broken Threads and on our website in the past. (I now request if we don't have this posted on the board now.. to get it up there!)

The SA Hopper and RS Quad are of course now integral Alberta Pattrerns.

HE WILL BE SORELY MISSED! INDEED AN IRON FLY 2006 CONTENDOR! AND BROUGHT US TWO OF THE FINEST ALBERTA PATTERNS!

R.S. Quad PMD

It would be tough to find someone more immersed in the world of fly fishing than Roman Scharabun. A certified fly-casting instructor and professional guide, Scharabun also ties flies commercially, builds custom rods and volunteers for several fly-fishing organizations. All this while holding down a day job as a school teacher. With his work often appearing in fly-tying magazines, videos and books—including the FFF’s Patterns of the Masters series—Scharabun has developed dozens of successful designs. Probably his most potent trout-fly pattern, for example, is the R.S. Quad series, of which the R.S. Quad PMD is a favourite. Today, this productive series is widely used in western North America, while also gaining adherents from as far away as the Ukraine. No wonder Malcolm Knopp and Robert Cormier asked Scharabun to contribute trout patterns to their 1997 book, Mayflies: An Angler’s Study of Trout Water Ephemeroptera—one of Canada’s premier contributions to fly fishing for trout. Given the 49-year-old’s undiminished passion for all things fly fishing, it’s safe to say he still has plenty more to offer.

SA HOPPER

When I first began putting the pattern together I must admit experiencing definite reservations as to its possible effectiveness. My main concern was that too many triggering characteristics were being incorporated into one pattern. Would this possibly cause the trout to have second thoughts about the imitation floating over them? Once testing began it became obvious that this would rarely if ever be a problem. I believe the test results simply reinforced proposed theories that trout do in fact have primary and secondary triggering characteristics that they look for in a fly be it natural or artificial. Their concentration on these triggers may be so absolute that other triggers that may in fact be important at other times are at this time ignored. Hypothetically, this would then make the pattern effective under a variety of conditions and use by numerous experienced anglers over the past several years seems to support this hypothesis.

I TRULY regret never having wet a line with him... and I know he was a very close friend of Dale Johnston and Jack Dennis, as us all.

HE IS ALREADY MISSED!

I am HOPING that we can request that Barry White... another SUCH SPECIAL INDIVIDUAL (and founding NLFT member) can be coaxed now into tying these two patterns above for us INSTEAD on March 6th.

I just called Roy and broke the news to him as well... whom is lucky enough to own a few of Roman's rods.

I just got off the phone with BOTH Roy Ramdeem (a.k.a. Flyfish) and Barry White whom HAD not yet heard the news yet about Roman... and BOTH WERE just as floored as I was. In fact Barry did not hear about Pol.. and was doubly crushed.

Barry and I will be meeting tommorow near my place at 10 AM to reminsice. HOWEVER, he has agreed to the following next week... change in venue wise. I hope you don't mind I have done this.

Lance: Ties RS QUAD (I was instructed by the master himself!)

Dennis Southwich: Ties SA Hopper (I personally know this is his favorite pattern!)

Barry: Ties Burlap Stone (Another Solid Alberta Pattern)

All to honour our freind Roman S.

Dudes & Dudettes... everyone I've talked to so far has been PRETTY MUCH DEVISTATED by this news. The previous comment pretty much summed it up.

In honour... the Alberta Klave 2 uh-oh 5 page web background is already BLACK!

http://ranger-bob.net/Embarrass2005.html

I hope to see a lot of NLFT members in attendance in COLORS next week!

:(

Popping into the DVD Player now.. on the ManCave projector screen.

If anyone else wants to get together tommorow at 10 AM with Barry and myself... just email me 'lance-taylor@shaw.ca'.

Truly a sad, sad, day in the fishing community.

I can still remember my first contact with Roman. It was at the Mayfield. He was sitting there tying flies and he asked me what I would like to see him tie. I noticed this yellow fly sitting at his tying bench, pointed to that fly and he proceeded to tie that fly. An amazing tyer indeed. When Roman finished this fly, I asked him what it was called. This is when I had my first encounter with his famous SA Hopper. Roman gave that fly to me that day. I truly thanked him for this. I still have this fly in my fly box. It will now come out and will now find a new home at my fly tying bench.

I have had many other opportunities to talk with Roman and learned many techniques in tying flies.

Still in shock

I'm Stunned!

Roman was a true gentleman.

He was always approachable and in good spirits.

I have many fond memories of conversations with him.

I tried a couple of times to go fishing with him on the Crow

but something always intervened. Now the chance is gone. Damn!

Roman was a great believer in the Northen Lights

and provided many hours of work and presentations

without asking for anything in return.

A great friend of Alberta Flyfishing is gone and we'll all be poorer for that.

God rest his soul!

I am just totally shocked by this news Keith just called me and when I heard this my chin hit the counter. I will miss him very much. We have lost a great innovator of our sport. He will sorely be missed. I gained great respect for him while workikng with him for the Roman & Jack show. He gave me some of his insight on the subject of fly tying which I will alway remember. It was to him not so much how well you tied but how you used the material around you and not be scared to use something new.

As for Wed night I would be honoured to tie the SA hopper. As Lance said It is one of my favourite patterns. I have caught many a fish because of Roman.

I will be at the funeral on Tuesday.

Again We have Lost a Great Friend and a Great Friend to the Sport of Fly Fishing.

My Condolences go out to the family and friends.

Tight Lines Always

Just had breakfast with Barry White and Dave Robinson. We are good to go with that format for next week then, all agreed it would be a fine tribute to Roman.

Afterwards, Dave and I met Lorne at TFC and broke the news to him, and bumped into another NLFT'er. Of course I picked up some books off the shelves (his patterns were in about 6 of them), handily spotted the materials list for the RS Quad... scored some Turkey Biots and Flats.

A few boys will be getting together at my place tonight again as well.

Yeah... jaw dropping news indeed, and Scratch and I already discussed putting together a tribute page for him on our site. Then, another thought dawned on me as I walked over to meet the boys this morning.... we need to add another sign out at Muir as well on "The Walk Of Fame". :(

We can't also forget his Blue Wing Dun pattern either... about the only flies I ever bought in my life from Denny's when he tied commercially for the store, of course you knew they were his flies by the "RS" written on the bags.

He is already missed indeed (below from the SuperFly catalog).

Remembering a fly-fishing Friend

I first meet Roman in early 1980, fishing the pond at Cardiff one late summer evening; I made about 15 casts with my new Mitchell combo from the Fishing Hole, and lost 15 flies creating a rather small tsunami. Countless hours of viewing that House of Hardy casting video rented from Denny’s fly shop was not paying off. Roman came over and literally broke the ice and pointed out a few techniques, not because he was a caring school teacher he is just that kind of guy. I made one more cast created a few new wind knots, desperately trying to undo these knots looked over at Roman and there he was releasing a full grown 18” rainbow. I was in the company of a fly-fishing purest.

Well the rest is history from the regular Saturday morning coffee secessions at the Fishing Hole to fly-tying afternoons at Denny’s. Treks to almost every tributary in the Rocky Area, Mountain Parks, Bow/Red Deer, Crowsnest, Elk, Douglas Lake Ranch Gerrard rainbows and our last hiatus Wells Grey Park. Touched by too many, Reg Denny, Lee Wolff, Lefty Kreh, Pol Jourgensen, Paul Kaufman, Sylvester Nemes, Steve Rayjeff, Brian Chan. Not to mention good friends who traveled in three’s Mike Lawson, Gary Lafountain, and Jackson Hole One Fly Jack Dennis. Wulff invented the western dry fly Jack Dennis perfected it – doesn’t everyone have a copy of Western Dry Flies?

Noted for great custom rod building, rod blanks in those days were considered rejects by the great rod manufactures so he built and fished with Hardy’s, R.L Winston, Orvis, Thomas & Thomas and our favorite a Sage 4 piece 490 RPL. Many years pasted, many club activities served, The Edmonton Trout Club, TU, FFF. I did the family thing and Roman excelled as an avid rod builder/production fly-tyer, author, FFF certified caster, Crowsnest guide phew…too much to mention here.

With Hook and Hackle in the south, and not much present in the way of fly-tying offered in the other clubs the NLFTC was born after a trout club meeting at the regular watering hole at Smithy’s in Kingsway Garden Mall. Roman being one of the founding 5 or 6 disciples at this gathering.

Roman has done a lot for fly-fishing in Alberta and well recognized world wide. There was a lot more in our fly-fishing journey…..too much to tell. His legacy will live on in his custom rods and flies.

Will always remember the great fishing escapades... your favorite was the Crow and now that you are looking from up above, I will have to start counting my catches on a cigarette pack. I still have to beat 63 fish/hr.

Roy….

I also emailed Vic Bergman, and the president of FFF, and a few other Canadian Flyfishing Magazines with this very sad news. All were equally stunned.

I already posted a tribute page here... http://ranger-bob.net and put out the campfire for Roman.

Over 1,000 hits today.

Great scan Lance, e-mail me them if you can. It was a very sad day indeed. It was also great to see some old faces and a pleasure to meet new ones, the sprit of fly-fishing was everywhere. Thinking of planning a first day of the season out in rememberance of Roman...what's the thinking in the group?

I have higher resolution scans I'll make available.. post a URL later... originals were 12 MB each page.

I also heard from Christina S. in a private email stating she and her family were touched by the tribute pages and open discussions so far. I have some new business to discuss at the meeting tonight also in this regard. More later.
