CBrendan Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 Do you prefer to tie on a rotary or non-rotary vice? I currently use a non-rotary and I am wondering if I should upgrade to a rotary vice. I mainly tie trout flies, size 12 to 18, and I am wondering if a rotary would allow me tie faster and with better quality? Quote
kemo99 Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 I use a Peak rotary vise myself. It's the same one we use at the club. I (or someone at the club) can give you a hands-on demo pretty much any regular club meeting night. For me, it helps with even spacing and I think the results look better.ken Quote
CBrendan Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 Ken, I see the peak vise is quite popular. I definitely need to start coming out to the meetings again, and hopefully I can check out some different tying vise. Quote
Paulf Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Brendan...I purchased a peak vise quite a few years ago and love it. The main reason I bought it was because of my tying realistics. Now I don't have to remove the fly from the vise to view it from different angles. Now that I have it, I find I use it for many applications, wrapping ribbing around the body is so much easier, same goes when palmering hackle. You will not go wrong with getting a rotary. As for tying faster, I did not get a rotary vise for that reason and as for quality, just taking your time learning the techniques will eventually help you in tying quality flies, and with that in mind, you will find you will tie flies faster.
