Subject: Alberta Conclave 2014 - Golden Trout!
Date: Sun, 2 Mar 2014 22:15:26 -0700

As promised last fall, I am planning another FF@ conclave in Alberta this year during the week of August 17. This year we are trying for golden trout. They are rare in Alberta – there are only 4 lakes that have fishing for them. I had heard that they are naturally reproducing but there is also occasional stocking. Either way, this is the only species of trout or char endemic in Alberta’s waters that I have not caught yet. This should be a lot of fun!
The ultimate destination is Barnaby Ridge Lakes, west of Pincher Creek in southern Alberta. I have not been there yet but I am told by reliable sources that it is about a 3-hour hike up to the lake where the fishing is. My current plan is to make an overnight of it, sometime mid-week, but that is to be confirmed. The rest of my time would be spent on the Crowsnest, Oldman, and perhaps Castle River systems. The Crow and Oldman I know reasonably well but the Castle is new to me – hopefully some local expertise will grace our gathering (Mr. Harps are you listening?).
No specific camp site has been chosen yet. I will do a scouting trip in June or July to get specific GPS coordinates.
Even if you are not interested in the golden trout bit, the Crowsnest and Oldman Rivers are worth a trip from just about anywhere in the world. The Crowsnest was the site of our first Alberta FF@ conclave in 1995 and is still a great place to cast to rising trout. In addition to the Crow, the Oldman, Livingston, and Elk are all within an easy drive to change things up for a day.
One serious note – as clavemeister, I simply will not tolerate discussions of climate change, infection vectors for didymo, or the laziness of stocked browns. I have to draw the line somewhere.
Keep an eye on the list for more details.
Jim

The Alberta Claves... Jim it would be great to do this one at Barnaby Ridge, hopfully we will get some warm weather that late in the high mountains, if we are looking at late August. There are a few measly insect hatches mid july early august in past years. Its a good hike, so the lead time will help getting the cardio and leg muscles up. We promise not to have any so called discussions on world politics, and surly climate change over light sips of single malt. :-0

You guys wont regret the hike up! Fantastic little fishery with fish that can be willing one minute then unrealistically frustrating the next. I didn't make it up last year due to health issues but had it down to a 50 minute hike a few years ago. Don't forget to make noise on the way up and have a bearspray on hand. Some very surprising hatches up there in my experience, lots of food around in the summer.

It is really good to see some interest from you guys. Dennis & Dan it would be great to meet up again. Roy and albertatrout, I'd love to have you join us, particularly since you both seem to have experience. The warning around climate change and politics discussions was for the benefit of my FF@ friends - late this winter the shack nasties have really set in and they are feuding like Hatfields & McCoys. Come fishing & talk about whatever you want over single malt. In August near the Crow, there are great nighttime hatches...

I'll post an update when I develop more information.

Jim, my passion is Golden Trout and as such have fished Barnaby, Upper and Lower Southfork as well as Rainy Ridge. With success at Rainy. I'm planning to fish Michelle lakes this summer if time permit's.

I would be happy to converse with you offline via Personal Messenger .

By the way I agree with albertatrout the hike is well worth it, it's all about the journey.
