Garhan Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 Does anyone recall the Carson Lake Special ? History and/or recipe would be great. If known. Quote
Michael Dell Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 Hmm, it's not in the Denny's Flies of Alberta book, but I am almost certain it is an Alberta pattern tied for Carson Lake. I don't think it is the one tied for Carson Lake in Colorado http://donbastianwetflies.wordpress.com/2012/01/02/carson-lake-special-wet-fly/ but I could be wrong. Barry Phillips might know this one. Garhan Posted November 19, 2012 Author Posted November 19, 2012 Thanks Michael. I do wonder about wether or not it is the same fly as what Don is trying to get history on. The fellow that brought it to him is from Colorado. And like most east slope fisherman we have a tendency to travel far and wide to fish it. But either way that fly seems to have eluded my memory some what. If I recall there was lots of green it it, but thats about it for the recall. Quote
dave robinson Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 I remember back before they put the RV camping in at Carson. We used to use the walk-in campsites. There was also no fancy fishing dock, just a primitive boat launch where we 'd put our canoes in. The "fly" of choice at the time we called a "KVC Nymph". It consisted to a small treble hook baited with Kraft Velveeta Cheese. There! My sodid past as a bait chucker is now public for all to see. Quote

Got there by accident because we were looking for new Grayling fishing creeks. About 1971 we started fishing Chain Lake north of Athabasca, because Carson had gotten to popular with all the big fish it produced on that nymph. Quote
Garhan Posted November 22, 2012 Author Posted November 22, 2012 So at the meeting last night a fellow and I discussed this pattern. Wish I new his name. He was one of the commercial tiers of this pattern out of Denny's shop. He was nice enough to share with us the original material list and I hope he contributes some history of the fly in the Streamer section of What's in the Box. Quote
SnoWolf Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Barry Phillips is the name of the fella you are referring to.. Quote

Terry H Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 I have a vague recollection of the Carson Lake special, although I never fished there. My recollection coincides with Garhan's, in that lots of green comes to mind. I also have a feeling that the fly is mentioned in the book by Russ Thornbury that was published back in the 70's I believe -- the memory gets foggy as one gets old. Unfortunately I don't have the book, but somewhere in my files, I have some photocopies of various pages of interest. If I find them some day, I'll check for any mention of the CLS. 1 Quote

Coloflyguy Posted February 1 Posted February 1 The original Carson lake fly was developed by Jack Force from Mesa Colorado in the 1950’s ,he tied a gross of flies each evening and sold to L Cook sporting goods in Grand Jct Colorado, he sourced the feathers from the necks of local chickens. source from David Force, Jacks son.
