The Walleye was a nice gift on the fly. Two days of fishing in hard winds of 20-40 km/h took its toll on my shoulder and dehydrated me to a piece of popcorn. But what a hoot. The later spring openings on the lakes will keep use from getting an opportunity at the larger hens after the spawn. We saw very few large hen Pike this year. But then we are 2 weeks later as well.

Gary great looking pictures. Looks like you were having a great time of it. I finally made it out on Monday thing just didn't work out the way I wanted them to go. I guess you have weekends like that. I did make it out to a local pond Salters and had lots of fish on but just couldn't keep them on lost one that was into the 20 inch area. Really nice looking fish when he cleared the water. The fish were really fiesty and most them would striaght at you and it was s hoot trying to pull in the slack line. That was part of the reason couldn't keep them on. Fly of chose was the Chromie. Tried leechs but had very limited sucess. Once I went to the Chomie it was fish on.

Thanks for the Pictures

Yes we had a hoot catching loads of smaller fish. Didn't get anything big like we have in the past. I am glad that I can not count the days that I have been skunked (thats by choice) LOL there has been so many. it is said that Black midges are the early pattern to keep lots of from #6-18. I really like the British Buzzers for that kind of fishing with a Boobey Fly in bright orange or Chartreuse as an indicator.. Chromies are also great.

...Gary, it looks like you had a fun day of fishing...some nice looking fish too...I have yet to catch a walleye of the fly, it is on my bucket list...hopefully this year I will succeed...thanks for sharing...

This is the pattern I use when I'm going for Walleye.Fantastic at the beginning of the season when they aren't very aggressive.Just a little pop-strip along the sandy bottom and your golden.

The second photo is a fly I tied for the first time this year to try.I got the materials from a fellow I met in minnesota last fall.It was a killing fly at Lesser Slave.Went into the local shops a couple weeks ago and saw nothing that came close to this syn.

Was up at Lesser Slave this past weekend and landed over 70 fish, both pike and walleye on these two patterns.Wind was a hard 30 coming out of the north so I was a little surprised at the numbers I pulled in.

Try the NSR, I used catch them and Sauger there frequently on a Yellow or Orange marabou Muddler. The Science Park or the confluence of Aux Pin Creek usually are good sites with plenty of room to backcast at both.

Slave lake is good. I lived there for 5 years. Have you fished the Slave River or the Ottauwa River yet for Pike or Walleye. Both produce very large fish. I had won the Slave Lake Tournament (Prior to the Golden Classic) weekly prizes off the Slave River a couple of times for Pike and the Ottawa River took largest walleye of the year in 89 for a grand prize of $500.00. It was fun.

The Slave Lake Walleye Tournament, I had held largest fish caught during a tournament for about 11 years I heard. Big surprise to me as I thought that record would have been broken long before 11 years.

Sorry Garhan for not responding sooner.I've been in the bushes of B.C and Alb. working not playing for the last 3 weeks.

No I've never fished those rivers for the course fish, but I've heard like you said they can be fantastic.Maybe I'll give them a try next May Long.

You can easily go from the Provincial Park boat launch south and around the corner into the long bay area. Even fishing off the long sand flat in front of the bay is a great spot. You just need to be smart about it. If you see a storm a brewing get off the lake regardless the size of your boat. My best friend and fishing buddy lives up there and him and I have been fishing Cold Lake and area for 35 years now. We started with 12 foot boats, went into 16 footers and now run 18'-3 with 150 hp engines and side kicker motors. ( Our old tournament boats)We have seen some crazy storms and have sat them out on the opposite side of the lake more than once, but never for more than 2 days. Or you can go to the ski hills and fish the back bay there. It is well protected and very accessible water to fish. But hey what do I know> I am sure I have logged several hundreds of hours on Cold Lake and it is one of our best lakes in this province for Lakers, Pike and Walleye. Not to mention big perch if you can find them.

I dont know that I would run a belly boat but i have run my pontoon boat there before. I would run a belly boat at the ski hill though. And if all else fails your close to several very good trout lakes on the Saskatchewan side of the border.

I did. It was a great day. No big Pike as they had already moved out to open cooler water. Lots of smaller males up to 10 lbs.
