Junior
Nicely done, gentlemen. Too bad the water came up on you, but you did better than I had expected. So, is runoff just getting started in that area?
Rainbow
The showers in different areas were passing through on Friday night that caused most of the turbidity in Dismal. It poured at Wolf Lake on Friday evening but Sat mornning 10 km away some of the roads were quite dusty. As stated Sat at site DC 13A the clarity was good but Sunday at site DC14, we started with visibility about 1.5 feet however Quentin caught his in turbid water - with a beadhead nymph. Four hours later vis improved to 2'. Great looking water habitat and a good time. Hopefully, we will be back in late summer or fall.
DennisS
Great report guys sorry couldn't make it out. Hopefully next time. I'm going to try some time next weekend to get out on our spots. Looking forward to that. Glad to hear fish were caught. Sounds like a hopper dropper system is going to be the one of choice. I used a CFF with a dropper and it work very well. jjfish
Nice work guys! Grayling distribution data early in the season will be very useful in understanding the biology and movements of this critter in the system. It would be great if we could repeat thes sites later in the summer. Jim
Michael Dell
As Dan said Jim and I fished our section DC11A on Saturday. The water was clear (but tea-stained as I would expect) with 3+ feet visibility. This was surprising as upstream at the same time there was limited visibility as Dan reported. We fished from 1 pm to about 6 pm and did not see a single fish rising. Water temperature was good at 58 degrees F, but there were few bugs on the water. We saw some caddis egg-laying, and a few mayflies in the air. I finally caught a 22 cm grayling on a tungsten bead head Norm's All-Purpose nymph at the head of a pool. Dan said the grayling were in the pools and not in the riffles or runs and he was right. There were all sorts of undercuts, nice runs, and riffles that should hold fish. Maybe later in the season. Jim and I are returning to fish our other section DC12 this summer. Thanks to Dan for organizing the camp. We had good company for the evenings. DennisS
Brandi and I made it back. We managed to get to our Dismal Ck loction(or close anyway) We got there a bit later than we wanted to. We had a little route problem. With Brandi's help we got it all cleared up. We didn't get onto the water until almost 11:30. Gave Brandi a little bit of instruction on casting and we were off. No pictures Dan both Brandi and I didn't do well with camera's. We forgot them. We went up stream and there was some very nice looking water. We noticed Stonefly husks on the rocks, Looks like we missed them by a couple of weeks. Not a whole lot of insect life flying around. Saw a few may flies and the odd caddis. We did roll some stones and found mayfly nymphs and caddis cases. We did see some minnows but really couldn't tell what they were. Lots of step down riffles and runs. There did seem to be lots of depth. Now the Good and the bad. We put our flies into some very fishy looking water and we didn't come up with a whole lot. The good news is Brandi did hook into a fish coming off a riffle into a pool. Unfortunately she didn't get to land it. Also in the same area we saw a couple of rises. So evidence says the're are the odd one in this general area. For the type of water we were fishing there should have been a lot more fish. Brandi did very well and by the end of the day her casting was getting very good. I have to thank Brandi for a great day and man does she make a mean sandwich and the best Bacon Cookis ever. We hope to get out again to get our second location. and may try Dismal again. It did show a bit of promise. Quentin
Here's a couple pics. This is Dismal Creek. John M. helped Heather, Charlie, and I. I owe you a thanks for that day, John, it was fantastic. Here are the pics of when you crossed the river. For the record, I have no pics of him crossing, because I put my camera away and stood down-river...just in case. QT
