GraylingGal
Hi everyone My field season for the grayling genetics project is about to begin! I'm going to be sampling many of the streams around Swan Hills and a few near Lesser Slave. Does anyone know of a good informal camping location west or north from Swan Hills or near the town of Lesser Slave? Also, if anyone knows what the access is like to the headwaters of Inverness, Moosehorn, or Sawridge Creek, please let me know. Any information would be much appreciated! DennisS
Hi Grayling Girl is this Jess?? Not sure about Slave lake area but Swan Hills area there is a place by the Freeman R. It was closed down last yr do to tree knocked down but it has habitable (washrooms were not be looked after). Not sure about this year. There is a camp ground on Freeman Lake. Threre is a privte camp ground in the town of Swanhills that the price seemed reasonale. The best info I can give you on the streams around Swanhills (moosehorn) us pick up a backroads book. Have want to give this a try but never had gotten there. I hope this helps a bit. Tight Lines Always Dennis S
GraylingGal
Hi Dennis Yep, this is Jess! Thanks for the information. I'll let you know how it goes this summer. Do you know if there will be anyone revisiting Dismal Creek this summer?
Paulf
...hey Jess...Dan and I will probably be going back...fishing may be sporadic, but the scenery and wildlife make it a worthwhile trip...and we'll even take a few pictures... flycaster
Also, if anyone knows what the access is like to the headwaters of Inverness, Moosehorn, or Sawridge Creek, please let me know. Access can be found....A few words of advice though;1) Swan Hills mud is among the worst I have experienced....when it rains up there....and it does...those roads/trails that were a piece of cake going in, will be murder coming out...2) A map or satellite view is essential....those oilfield roads will lead you in circles... 3) To be safe...don't camp near either of the streams you mentioned....rain in the Hills can make these creeks rise several meters overnight! 4) Of course you can't talk about this area without mentioning Grizzlies....be cautious...enough said. kemo99
Grayling Gal, Our grant application was (partly) approved at the beginning of the month. We will be doing quite a bit of work on Dismal and other creeks in the area. More information will be posted once the planning starts. ken
