N. Ram Trip

I was going to give one of my 2 fishing buddies a chance to post on our weekend fishing adventure. I was going to give them a chance to tell their big fish stories first but it looks like they have left it to me.

Enjoy our day on the N. Ram. I will say sorry for any spelling or punctuation errors as there will be many.

I met Rick and Vince at Tim's in Rocky Mountian House and left for some unknown location on the N. Ram. Day look fantastic. No major mishaps getting to the River. We all had decide on our fly of choice to start with Rick with an Adams, Vince with RS Qaude, I started with my trusty EZ hopper. I headed down stream Vince headed up stream Rick well we will just say he was having a small melfunction of his plumbing system and he thought he would make sure all was in working order before he got started.

I managed to get down the bank and across the river without breaking my neck or falling in, so I figured it was going to be a good day. Got to the first good run and chucked the hopper in and nothing did this a couple of time and still nothing. Then I notice that there were fish in the run, and also noticed lots of caddis around along with BWO. Decided to change up right away and went to a Partridge & Green. First cast bang fish on. Man what a scrap he put up. After several minutes I manage to land my first 20in N. Ram Cutty. Took a couple of pictures then let him go. The fish were still rising so I put a second cast in the run and bang again another cutt but a bit smaller around 16in. Decided to head down stream. Skipped down about 4 pools to leave room for Rick to have some undistured water. I rose several more on the P&G but just couldn't keep them on. In the meantime Rick finally got his system cleaned out and got started. I had told him that there was still rising in the pool that I had caught the big one in. It wasn't long and Rick was into fish. We gave a shout to Vince and he was fit to be tied as he had fishing rising all around him and could not get a hook up. He said he had changed to at least 14 different patterns. The best he could get was those finicky cutts to come up look at his fly then they would wink at him and say no thank you. It was just one of the days for Vince.

Back to a huge big deep pool I found fish rising but they just didn't want the P&G any longer. Managed a small 10incher. I thought I would go to the heavy artillery. As they say go deep or go home. Put on a White Gary Borger leech with a pink egg or head with one big split shot to get down. I lobbed it into the hole severeal time then wack line straighten out and the that 3wt or mine bent just about double. Fish on. This guy put up one heck of a fight. Finally got him up into the shallows, took a picture and let him go. He was slightly bigger than my first one. I couldn't hardly put my 2 hands around him to let him go. Very nice fish.

I gave a call to Rick and he said he had a caught one really nice fish 20 plus inches and a couple in the 16, 17in. range. Vince was still having his problems. The cutties were just not be cooperative for him today. I suggested nymphing but no response.

I decide to head farther down stream. Ran into a spot were the river broke up into a bunch of braids. It was just like a jungle in front of me. I started working my way through over dead fall and thick willows. Found a couple of pools but were almost unfishable as there was just to much wood in the way. I worked my way slowing down stream until I notice that a couple of braids ran into each other creating a nice run. But just then I notice a fisherman in front of me. Oh crap figured fishing was done. I asked how he was doing and he said that they had strained the water pretty good. He said you could see the fish but they just couldn't get them to take there spinners. He noticed I was flyfishing and he figured that was the ticket, as they couldn't get them to take anything that they had. I worked my way around them and started fishing again. I was looking for the fish when I notice 5 fish together and all of them were in or close to the 20in range. They were not rising at all. You could see that they were after something near the bottom. I slowly rigged up with a small pheasent tail with orange bead and dropped it right in front of one and could watch him slowly rise and suck in the PT. I set the hook and fish on. He did not waste no time heading to a log and sure enough he snaped me off. The pod didn't take off far. I tied on an other PT and worked my way a head of them again. It was hard working to get the fly to drift where I wonted to because there we're all kinds of trees in the way. I finally got a decent drifted and bang again another fish on but he didn't like the flavour of the PT and spit it out at me. They didn't take off to far again. I watched them line up again and notice that one of them had the orange beaded PT sticking our of it's snout. I thought that kind of funny. After that I couldn't get them to take anything.

Decided to head back to the vehicle and have a bite to eat. So far for my first time on the N. Ram not a bad outing.

We all got back to the vehicle and told our fish stories with Vince still not having much luck. Vince convinced both Rick and I to try the hole he was abused by the cutties. Vince would head down stream to try his luck. Rick and I got to the pool and it was big. The way the sun was hitting the water it was very difficult to fish. Rick missed a couple but he couldn't keep them on. He decided to head up stream and I stayed and put the White leech on again. Dragged it through the pool but nothing at all. I could still see the odd rise and just didn't want to give up. I finally broke down and put on a gray Elk Hair caddis. First cast this huge cutt rose out of the depths of the pool and went down. I cast it again and sure enough up he comes again. This time even higher. Damned if he refuses again. I thought for a minute he wink at me an I might have even seen a bit of tongue sticking out. I decided to give the pool the Rick trick (a rest). I rolled some rocks took pictures of some bugs then went back and flipped out the caddis, it was just one big slurp, rod bent and the fight was on. Again after the fight took a pictures. This guy was tired out and beat up. I'm sure Vince must have wore the guy out or he was tired from laughing. It was all scared up from all the nymph Vince throw at the poor thing(ha ha on that one). This one was in the 20in range again. By this time it was getting late and we decided to call it a day.

It was a fantastic day, great fishing buddies, great place to fish, and great weather.

On the whole the N. Ram was good to us. Fish were caught and plenty of laughs. What more can you ask for. Maybe just that Vince would catch a fish on a nymph.

Thanks guys for taking me along. No major misshaps the day was good.

Great report Dennis. Wish I'd been there, but my free time is pretty limited these days, and it's only going to get worse once the baby comes. I'd like to think that we'll all fish together someday. Should we try to plan a Little Smoky trip this October, or just call it our 5 year plan?

Our trip was indeed a very cool trip. The North Ram is a very cool river, beautiful water but one needs to do a lot of walking (and I mean a lot of walking) between holes. For me, I was humbled....seeing monster cutties on the rise in one pool and not catching one of them sure was a frustrating experience even after trying about a dozen flies...oh well, thats fishing. The following day on the Shunda my luck changed and many a brookie was caught and man, oh man, are they ever a pretty fish this time of year.

All in all, it was a great trip. Good food, good friends with lots of laughs and good fishing. Got to do this river again.

Very nice pictures man. Sorry to say that my buddies are no where around to take pictures or else they would have been posted. Dennis did take a few pictures of the cutties that he caught so maybe he'll post them for all of us to enjoy.
