Looking For Some Good Reading

I'd like to say this is my first post on here but I've been reading these forums for about 6 months.

 

I've been spin casting on lakes since I was about 5 years old but only recently (last fall) have I attempted to move to fly fishing and river fishing in general. I'm already enrolled in your casting course at the end of May but I'm wondering if you guys have any books that you would recommend. I'm looking more for books that deal with entomology, fish behaviour and reading water than with the casting aspect of the sport (as I will be getting that from the course).

 

Also, I was at the show and sale at the Mayfield on Thursday and saw an issue of Fly fusion magazine. I'm thinking about maybe subscribing to that. Does anyone know anything about that magazine?

 

And one last question (sorry for so many). My girlfriend is showing some interest in fishing but I haven't managed to get her a fish yet. I remember a few years ago having a ton of fun with goldeye on both fly and spinning setups on the Red Deer river. Could anyone give me some advice on where and when to find these guys on the North Saskatchewan? I'm not looking for anyone's hotspots, just some general information as I just happened to stumble onto them on the Red Deer and I know virtually nothing about them.

 

Anyways, any info would be greatly appreciated and I'll see some of you guys in May!

Carter, Greg here, try the river across from Hermitage Park, below Strathcona Park. Access (if the river is low enough) is via the north parking lot, down the paved utility road to the outfall station. Go around the corner along the fence to the dirt path running down the bank. Alternatively, try Hermitage Park itself.

Just to clarify though, the course isn't just casting.

It will be an info packed two days with topics like you described included.

Of course they won't covered in depth, but you will get a good exposure.

 

Don't wait until the end of May though, come out to a meeting of the Northern Lights Fly Tyers any Wednesday evening

If you buy a membership in the NLFT here's a bunch of advantages like store discounts and the company of other fly fishers.

There's two you would appreciate especially though.

Firstly ,when you join NLFT you are actually joining a chapter of Trout Unlimited

As a member of TU, you get included a subscription to Fly Fusion.

Secondly, NLFT has the most extensive library of books and DVDs about fly fishing found anywhere, all available for loan to members.

 

As for Goldeye, yes,they can be found in the N Sask, right in the city.

Greg mentioned one spot, but there are many others.

They show up sometime after ice out and leave sometime in September.

Exactly when depends on water condition and flow rates.

I was pretty much set on purchasing a membership a while ago. I like the work Trout Unlimited does and it seems like a good place to do some volunteer work that will help me out career wise as well as just being a plain old good thing to do. I actually had no idea there were any benefits to it aside from meeting other fly fishers, which is really enough in itself. I'll try to make it out to a meeting soon.

 

As far as the goldeye go, thanks for the information. I'll head down there this spring and see if I can find some.
