dipperdan
Condolences to the family of the Calgary Flyfisherman who died fishing the Bow River Jan 3rd. Fishing in the winter, please watchout and fish with a buddy. A few years back, I had been inching close to filling my waders with that ice cold R.D.R.water,not wearing a wading belt and with my companions on the other side of the river. I'm am very thankfull , I made it out with a slight wetting of my undies, ( river water ) . Also some of those clear ice sheets can sneak up on you . Junior
I might be biased, but to me this really highlights a difference between Calgary and Edmonton. I fish the NSR through the whole open-water season. Every spring I'm out on the ice-shelves. I always stay back from the edge, bring an inflatable PFD, crampons and ice picks, but from a distance you can't tell any of that. Edmonton has this "keep of the ice" PSA they run, so passersby call the cops on me. It happens a few times every spring. It used to annoy me, but now I'm just thankful that I live in a city where the neighbors actually care. I'm not saying, I'm just saying... dave robinson
From the description, where the guy was found it's likely that few people would have seen him fishing and very unlikely that anyone would have seen him go down. So the addage of "fish with a buddy" is very valid. Would he have survived it he'd had a buddy close by? Who knows, perhaps not, but there's always the possibility. Ain't it nice though to know that if you do what Rick does here in Edmonton, that there's people out there who will notice and be concerned enough to make the call. Paulf
...yes fishing with a buddy is valid...one time fishing the RDR, I was almost bowled over by a clear sheet of ice floating down stream...I did not see this ice until the last minute, thankfully I was close to shore and was able to get out the way in time...you don't even know it is coming, doesn't make any noise...so watch out and stay alert when wading in the winter...
