dave robinson Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 I'm not a twitterer myself, but Edmonton Center of the Royals Astronomical Society is trying it out. the idea is that they set up a twitter site to which a limited number of club exec can post. It's then used to push out short bits of information of astronomical interest. Stuff like meeting notices, newsletter notices, group observing sessions, special events and hot astronomical news. Seems to me that NLFT-TUE could do a similar kind of thing. That is, provide place for club notices that can hit those with e-mail and smart phones. I'm waiting for some feedback from RASC before proposing a motion to this effect. Perhaps the Ranger could do a quick Twitter demo at a meeting? Quote

News and communication via email is fine for some as is twitter and facebook but you have to consider that we've got members that do not own or use a computer and still require delivery of our newsletter the old fashioned way....by mail. I'd be more interested in TU sending me a newsletter with info rather than getting some sort of short tweet. I have not received anything from TU since I joined...do we get any kind of info from TU? BJW Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 Tu sends out their newsletter "Currents" in every issue of FlyFusion, just got the new one to-day, have you not been getting either Canadian Flyfisher or since the change FlyFusion?. That's TU's newsletter. They also have sent out notices via e-mail. If you haven't received an e-mail notice from TU, then quite possibly your e-mail address isn't on their membership list. Inconnu Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 Twitter, nor Facebook is meant to replace newsletters or telephone. They are a very quick and efficient way to move information to many subscribers when it comes to making people aware of upcoming events, rather than having to wait a month to announce it. If there are or will be younger members in any Club or Organization then it may behoove the Club to look at both forms of communication. To garner support from the public or to draw more interest from specific groups, both are hard to beat…..actually they can't be beat. So you can try to talk to 1000 people face to face or you can use this format to do at least some of it for you. All about "we" and what may benefit any Group. Some members do not have computers, I imagine that may be so, yet the website is updated and used as a communication tool. So rather than phone every member you should be able to post on the website and have people pick up on it so you do not have to spend so much time on the phone. I still love to get magazines and newsletters, talking on the phone is still a big part of my day but there are other bigger and better uses for Facebook and Twitter. I am an unfriendly user and it has taken me a couple of years to see what the benefits of these two media streams are. 8^) Quote

tuber Posted January 9, 2011 Posted January 9, 2011 Sorry to resurrect this - but Twitter would also be an excellent means of promoting the January Fly Tying events - as well as casting clinics. Posts could be automated as weekly meeting reminders, and also to promote new posts to the web site, promote the videos that were recently added to youtube(great job btw!), and so on... Quote

Would also be nice if they had their own Twitter account as well. I will likely be bringing that up with them at tonight's AGM. Like the web page though, we'd need someone to take responsibility for keeping it up to date. RB: The RASC Edmonton Center does have a twitter account. It's in trial mode. Limited individuals who can tweet, no limit on subscribers. I haven't checked, but there should be a link onthe RASC web page. Talk to Luca at the meeting tonight. Vince You are right Vince - we do have members that don't own or use computers. And if those are the only people we want to attract to this club (I say 'we' in the metaphorical sense as I've been in ghost-mode for some time) than you are bang on. Don't publicize, don't promote, and don't spread the word. No one is suggesting that members are required to use these tools - but the Club needs to be proactive about supporting the means that are available to share our value. Without that effort, dare I say it, the club will just become the Old Timers. Attrition will take care of it in the long run. If TU Edmonton Chapter wants to see new blood, new memberships, new faces, and rejuvenation - the club is gonna have to get on board. It's 2011. 95% of grade one students are already more capable with computers than most of our membership. It's the way of things. Run away, or embrace it - that's a personal choice. For the club to continue to grow, and reach new faces - I don't see how it can't take advantage of the free solutions available in this world. Quote

Social networking routes are unequaled advertising and recruiting tools, provided your target audience is using them. Certainly among the younger generation, this'll be a large proportion. But in my 5 years with the club, most new members have been from the more "experienced" demographic, and with them, I'd say hard-copy and face-to-face recruiting methods will remain very important for some time. Sure there are members and potential members who have no use for Twitter, Facebook and other social media. Heck, as noted some don't even have computers. Now we're NOT going to leave those folks behind. We'll still do the face to face promotion. In fact the new exec should be prepared to step up that effort. But just as important is to not ignore the electronic generation. The future is in young people. We need more youth in our sport for it to survive. One of the key ways to reach youth is to use the new media. At the end of the day, we need both approaches. Quote
DennisS Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Guys great responses and for sure we need to learn and find ways to reach "ALL" Deomographics. I believe we have the people that can do that. I agree whole heartally with Greg that if we don't move with the times this club will go the way of the Doodoo bird, as several other clubs in this city. We need to appeal to the the younger generation to show them that Techknowledgy & fishing can go hand in hand. And yes you can teach old dogs new tricks. Junior Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Incidentally, I'm not sure I follow the allusion to the Old Timers; their membership is growing steadily, and their average attendance is over 80 people. Of course, they only meet once a month, but in my opinion Scott MacDonald and his group are doing a bang-up job, and we could probably learn a thing or two from them about recruitment. Maybe after the AGM we could set up a meeting with Scott and our new Membership Director. Quote
