Don Andersen Posted January 29, 2010 Posted January 29, 2010 Guys, A guy contacted me and wants recipe and picture of the Stauffer Special. Figure that some of you have a copy. thanx, Don Quote
TimD Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 Don, I use a size 12 2x short, some type of black micro chenille, a gold wire rib and some black hen hackle. The bottom fly is called a herl same fly but just has a peacock herl body (works about the same too). Regards, Tim stauffer_special.bmp Quote
RangerBob Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Don, is that Lloyd's pattern? Cool... hmm.. I recall seeing it in a back issue of Barry Mitchell's Alberta Fishing Guide.. no wait.... that was "The Mitchell Special" (also a secret fly for said Creek as I understand). The above recipe almost sounds / looks about right except I think for the hackle... but let me jump aboard the Sherman Wayback machine and get back to you. Hmmm... I think it was to imitate the little black winter stone flies out there that I see every year.. but have never actually seen fish take. I know Mikey D fishes an uber long tied Griffith's gnat to some effect to match that hatch. Looking.... researching... Damn.. you had to mention Stauffer in the winter.. spring.. my cabin fever rose about 15 degrees now. Quote

RangerBob Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Here is the ACTUAL pattern. I knew I had this pattern someplace (right from the book of "Flies for Alberta" that I got Reg to sign before he passed). Sigh... I still miss Denny's Flyshop. P.S. - Roy (DT, or other next of Kin).. please don't sue me. Stauffer_Special.pdf Quote
RangerBob Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Oh yeah, I also had this in my (private collection of) Flysource files ( http://www.flysource.net/) .. along with the rest of the patterns in the book.. so here you go. staufferspecial.fly PMS - Roy Boy, please don't sue me. Quote
RangerBob Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Here is the colour plate of Lloyd's tye. If I recall, everyone whom was in the book submitted an original hand tied pattern. I missed the deadline... c'est la vie. Quote
RangerBob Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I just updated my flysource file on this pattern here to contain all the history now for the ages. Why they published a book right.. to pass the knowledge on.. and FlySource came along to tuck it all away when it is needed. Uber.FliesOfAlbertaStaufferSpecial.fly Quote

Regards, Tim I think he's already lurking around Southwick's bench as we speak.. I noticed a few 'Spirit Orbs' in one of the photos he took. No wait... that was just Scotch & Five on the lens. However, I am already busy trying to channel Roman to lend a hand with the Size 32 hooks when they arrive. Quote
