Heading to Lethbridge and Cypress Hills

Just bought my first fly fishing set-up and I'm stoked to try it out. I'm heading to Lethbridge this weekend, then heading to Cypress Hills (Elkwater) for a week.

 

I ended up getting a TFO Series One 5 wt (2 piece), Trion reel (from ebay), 444SL Floating WF line.

 

Any tips on where to go at each location (I'll hit Bullshead and Ressor for sure).

 

As well, any tips on flies and technique would be appreciated. I know practice will be needed on whatever I do, but I'd like to get a bit of a headstart.

 

I'm also bidding on ebay for some fly tying equipment, so maybe I can spend some time getting more addicted over the winter..lol...

I fished Reesor a few years back, the creek has some small fish and the lake is better fished from a boat and such. Flies: take some dries , caddis #12's , gold rib hare's ear,10's 12's : pheasant tail 10's - 14's. You could try hopper dropper, Hopper - 20" to a nymph if they aren't rising with the HEAT , Fish the shallow's in the evening on the south side , cast to shore and strip back, They seemed to hang out right by shore. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN...........

Here's a few of the 'bows we got at Bullshead. They were rising all around us, but they didn't want my dry fly, so my father-in-law and just used our spinning gear, and caught a few.

Hey Adam,

I'm intrigued by the motor mount set up on your canoe - any chance you could post a couple pictures of it?

 

I'm fixing up a cedar strip that my father-in-law and I built 15+ years ago, and I'm planning on getting an electric motor for it.

No problem on posting some pics of the motor mount. Give me a few days as it's a bit of a pain for me to haul the canoe out.

Totem outfitters sells a pretty good motor mount.

It fits my 17 1/2 ff clipper tripper.

The key to any motor mout on a canoe is its adjustablility.

You may also find you need blocks on both the inside and outside of the gunwhales

Without both sets of blocks, the mount might shift when going in reverse.

I'm actually more interested in the transom board in front with the rod holder.

Do you find it intereferes with paddling at all?

Hi Dave,

 

I've seen those ones at Totem..they usually run about $100.

 

I made mine out of a 2x4 and a couple of knobs from Lee Valley..lol...probably cost me under $5.00.

If you're handy wth a table saw and router you're right.

Did you use blocks on the inside and outside

or did you just undercut your blocks so they get a good grip on the gunwhale?
