A One Day Beginners Fly Casting Clinic

 

Presented by members of the Northern Lights Fly Tyers and Fishers

 

May 5th, 2007 - From 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Location: Rundle Park, 2903 - 113 Avenue, Edmonton

Cost Members: $5.00 Non-Members: $25.00

 

Equipment Required: Bring your own Rod, Reel, Line, and Eye Protection.

Usually - the course is at Rundle Park and is at either the Top parking lot (near the tennis courts) or the bottom lot (to the right of the ACT centre) Generally - just look for the old farts waving rods in the air.

 

Visiting the club meeting on Wednesday is the best option if you can make it - as you will be able to talk to Sparky (Dave) personally.

Can you confirm the lot / park info? The PDF shows the EASTERNMOST parking lot at Rundle, but the text says WESTERNMOST and the map is titled "Queen Mary Park"....

A few may be goign for breakie at the BEvrely Crest before hand

Thanks Dave. The Westernmost lot is the area closest to the Ainsworth Dyer Bridge after you've passed the ACT centre.

Good on you Scratch, alot of people are not sure of east, west, north or south. That park can be confusing to people new to the area. I won't be able to make the meeting or the casting instructions, SORRY GUY'S.

Just in case you have the rainy weather twitches..

The Casting Clinic will be gong Saturday come rain or shine.

Some of us will be meeting at the Beverly Crest beween 8:30 nd 9 am for breaky

but the clinic proper starts at 10 am

The current forecast is for 40% chance of rain in the early am clearing in the late am

I'm hoping by the tme we get started the deluge will be over.

The high is supposed to go to 15. Bring sunscreen?

Beside the previous nights freak snow storm (3 to 4 inches) dumped in the South and East of Edmonton, the rain, and all the wind today... by noon we had ourselves a nice sunny day, and so as a bonus we got to teach folks how to deal with wind (you know you have to do it sooner or later eh?).

 

A big thanks to Dave is in order for putting on a well organized course (his first), and thanks to all the members whom took up his call to lend a hand. I personally had a blast helping out, and who knows.. I may have even picked up a thing or two.

 

I seen some 'wobbly' loose open loops get tightened up over the day... and much enthusiasm from all the folks whom took the course. Many whom had only JUST bought a rod the day before (as evidenced by the shrink wrap still on the cork), and have never hooked a fish yet, or wet a line in the water. In all there were about 28 people involved. It was cool to see all the smiles later in the day as people started to see things click into place.

Good event. Thanks for everyones time.

 

After we were finished my kids wanted to go fishing. We kicked a few ideas around and decided that we would try Muir.

It was busy around the dock and to either side but we managed to sqeeze in and had some fun casting. I think both of them are casting better and they where having fun.

 

We were not have much luck so we walked to the east (thats to the left of the dock for dipperdan) of the narows by the powerbox. It looked like a good spot so we started fishing. Joel was spending a lot of time getting his fly out of the grass until he figured out to take 4 more steps into the water and it went better for him, he was wearing his spiffy new waders and boots.

 

Jackie was doing well and only got caught up a couple of times. After about 30 mins Jackie finaly lost her hook in the grass. This was going way better than I thought it was going to, only one fly lost in 30 mins. So she picked a new fly (out of my box cause she did not want to loose any of hers?????) and I tied it on for her. She walked up to the edge of the water and stripped out what she thought she needed for line (amazing how much they learn from watching you. I never told her about that part.) She false casted about 10 times with the line hitting the water everytime and was reminisant of the ribbons the dancers use at the Olympics and let it fly quite haphazardly out on to the water. I kinda chuckled to myself and went about minding my own line and suddenly there was this high pitched very excited "I got a fish I got a fish" coming from my right. I looked over and saw that she had a good size one on to boot. As she got it closer to shore I could see already that it was bigger than any I had caught from there before(and no I did not tell her that part.else i would never live it down).

 

It took her about 5 minutes to bring it in and it was a beauty. We got the hook out and i was just handing it to Jackie to hold and it spooked from Joel walking up chattering away excitedly and flipped into the water and swam away. We did not get to measure it but I'm bettin that it was an easy 18"er.

 

So Joel doubled his efforts to no availe but seems to be doing well today despite the expierence(so much for the everyone must win theory they have at his school). I was lucky enough to hook one on the 5th cast past the "ok this is my last cast" time, but it was not ment to be as it turned into a long line release.

 

They are Both a little whiney today cause there mom is making them go to there cousins B-day today instead of letting them go fishing. I'm having a little trouble making them do the right thing and go to the party because in truth I feel the same way they do. So off to the party we go!!

 

HHMMMM so if we clean the garage Tuesday and rake the yard Thursday next weekend we could........................

Great story Sno.

It's heart warming to see some kids get into fly fishing.

They are welcome at any club outing any time.

Lets hope we can get some more kids out fishing.

Jim that's a great story! Yeah, I've had days like that where my kid has out fished me too. Get used to it.. sounds like it's gonna happen more often now.

Ya its all down hill from here. Be worse once boy gets one as well.

Some times its good to get what you wish for.
