vince Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 Sure would be nice to see some of Marc's fly tying tools in action this wednesday night. Perhaps someone who bought the vice and tool set ( hey Frank & Pauline ) could bring them along so the rest of us mere mortals can look and drooooooool. Vince I just checked the programe for this weeks meeting and I noticed something odd...the nick name that Dave R. is using is Sparkie. Now Dave ,should that not be Sparky instead of Sparkie? and is Rick going to tie a fly as a make-up for last weeks no meeting room? Quote
SnoWolf Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 Hey Vince Where you not at the club when Marc was there? He tied some pretty nice flies using his own tools and his vice. His vice is on my list of things I need to get but I'll have to wear out the one I have first. Gona be a few years b4 I can get it I'm sure. Sno Quote
vince Posted February 12, 2007 Author Posted February 12, 2007 Oh I was there alright ...but with so many bodies hanging around his stuff it was real hard to get a wee bit of play time. Vince Quote
SnoWolf Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 lol ya thats a true statement. I picked up a set when he was a the club and they sure are nice. So now I will have to learn to tie better. Quote
dave robinson Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 Vince: "Sparkie" is more of a name than "Sparky" is. Sparky is what your cat is when you pat it in cold dry weather or what Ranger Bob's fires are when the wood's too dry. As for Wednesday night. I wasn't planning on tying any flies. In fact, I just found out that Dennis is crapping out on me. Seems he just discovered that Wednesday is Valentine's Day and certain spousal obligations have taken precedence. So now I have to do the whole evening myself. My spousal unit won't kill me as we went dancing on Saturday already. It's all about planning ahead. As for Marc's tools Iv'e been playing around with the new tools myself. The items worth talking about are the dubbing twister, hackle pliers and whip finisher The dubbing twister has a couple of unique features that are nice The little hooks hold onto the thread more reliably The spring can hold the loop closed without pulling on the tool. The hackle pliers really hold a feather well, but don't work worth a poop on biots. The whip finisher is a cross between a matarelli and thompson. I'm finding it easier to use then either of those The long scissors are nice if you're using the majc tool and CDC In fact I did some playing with the majic tool and CDC on the weekend. I found I could tie a parachute #16 BWO way easier than before usnig CDC instead of hackle. However, more practice is needed to get those emergers right. Given the current weather, I'll have lots of practice time Quote

You think I could tye any better with 'em? Nope. I was asked to do a product review on them for FACA.. but if you are up for the task.. I'd love to see an article submission from yeah, and or we can compare notes. Again.. I like to use a product for at least 3 months before I form any opinion on it. However, my first impressions. Uhm, the longish flat scissors are real nice... but I still have problems using the Magic Tool even with them, perhaps my clamps springs aren't tight enuff or something -- but I still can't keep the CDC lined up in a dubbing loop when I transfer. Perhaps more practice, and a few spins of his DVD when I can get it out from the library. As for the whip finish tool.. it's my new best friend -- at least I had Marc show me how to use it while there. The dubbing twister, I am not a fan of -- like the spinny one Rowley showed us with the interchangeable heads. The small pointy curved scissor... so so. I rather like my Dr. Slick's I also paid good money for down at the show - $40. They are the bomb for tying SSH flies -- nobody can ever touch these scissors -- they are my precioussussses now. The MP thread splitter works nice with the MP threads, but damn that thread is already 8/0 now split again... fine stuff to work with indeed. A needle would have done the same thing though IMHO. I haven't messed around with any of those hackle clip thingies that came with it or the hackle plier / twisty thingy yet. Uhm... this is the stuff here: http://www.eflytyer.com/tools/petitjean.html These are GOLD baby! Gold! I can't believe I didn't buy a pair sooner! http://www.drslick.com/products_scissors1.asp PS - Like my Dr. Slicks... nobody can every touch my new MP Whip Finisher! Also my preciousssess now. I found something better then my modified rotary whip -- I never thought that would be possible. My past rant below on my other whipping tool. http://forum.nlft.org/index.php?showtopic=...&hl=rotary+whip Whip it good! Quote
DennisS Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 I also got the tool set and I sure like them. As for the Magic Tool most already know how I like that. As for the Hackle plier thingy it works great did some Griffth knats the other day and took the peacock heral and the grizzley hackle and spun them all togather then wrap forward. It work and looked fantastic. Also used it making some small CDC caddis twist then wrap method sure work good. Not so sure about the scissors as of yet whipfinisher Juries still out seems to be one extra move then the Materilli or Maybe we need Marc back for a oncore presentation. I will have one of his vices before summer gets here. Tight Lines Always Dennis S Quote
Pauline Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Hey Vince, where were you - Didn't see you at the meeting - especially when you make special requests. Sorry we missed you! Pauline & Frank Quote
vince Posted February 16, 2007 Author Posted February 16, 2007 Holy Smokes, miss one meeting and I'm in crap. Pauline, my mother-in-law went into the hosipital on Tuesday and I've been there keeping her and my wife company. Not a good situation for my mother-in-law so I thought it best to spend my time with her. I may have to put in another request...sure would love to see that puppy in action. As for the rest of the tools it was nice to see the thread I started continue. Again, it will have to wait till next week....with some good luck. Good to read Sparkie's and RangerBobs comments. Talk to you guys soon. Vince Quote
dave robinson Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 Vince:Too bad you missed out on my Stellar Demo of Hopper Dropper.(Dennis was a no show thanks to some silly Valentine thing with his wife)You would have learned lots of interesting ways to get into that new resolution of yours to actually try to drown a few nymphs this year. You might have found out that you can fish a CFF at the same time as a nymphand thus don't have to completely switch right away.Sparkie (aka Threephase) [some electrical humour there] PSYou have my sympathies for your additional family troubles.Do the Brit thing and keep a stiff upper lip eh.And spend your time on the family things that really matterA personal MP tool demo can be arranged when you are up to it.Dave PPS:I bought a new pair of wading boots this week.Hopefully I now won't bruise my foot again should we go bushwacking on Vice Creek. Now if I can only convince my wife that a new Zodiac is an appropriate present for my signifigant birthday coming up next month.D Quote
vince Posted February 19, 2007 Author Posted February 19, 2007 Dave Sorry I missed your presentation last week ...you may have to give me a one on one. A nymph suspended from a CFF would be a cool way to fish and I may have to give it a go. Thanks for your kind words regarding my mother-in-law. My wife and I have been by her side this past week. Day by day right now. Glad to hear you got a new pair of wading boots....Vince Creek and the cows will never be the same and as for the Zodiac ....just do it. Look at all of the quality time you can have on the water....having had two in the past I can tell you that they are one hell of a boat. Hope to see you this Wednesday night. Vince Quote
Terry H Posted February 19, 2007 Posted February 19, 2007 PPS:I bought a new pair of wading boots this week.Hopefully I now won't bruise my foot again should we go bushwacking on Vice Creek. Did I read this correctly?? "Vice Creek" Is anyone going to share the GPS coordinates for this one? Terry Quote
dave robinson Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Hmmm... "Vice" Creek sounds kind interesting. Dave Quote
