DennisS
Rick & I decide to try a new area(Swanhills) and try out my new Sage VT2 4 piece 3wt and both choices were great. We had a great time caught lots of garyling some small some in the 12 to 13 inch range. Not the LSR but it was fun. Beautiful day exploring new water will try again. Not sure if it will be this yr but will give the area a good look next yr for sure. Ricks' fly of choice was a Prince & mine was my new & improved Llama leech. Still deadly. vince
Dennis Sounds like you and Rick had a good time. Have you thrown any double bunnies yet with your new 3 weight. Small rods are a real hoot eh...I love mine but I'm thinking of switching over to a St.Croix Avid 7'9" 3 weight from my 7'6" 3 weight Sage Launch. I'm looking for an extra 3 inches and frankly I'm fond of the feel of St. Croix rods. Good fishing to you. Vince
DennisS
Yes to your first question and also caught a nice Grayling with it. As for a hoot it was fantatic. I really enjoy the rod. I would also suggest you take a surious look at the VT2 sage in the 8.6" casts like a dream. I really like it. Rick and I had a great time. Next time maybe take the 4x4 and do some exploring as I think maybe some of the grayling my have started to head down stream. Not sure if the Graying winter in the River or migrate down to the Athabasca or the deeper holes down stream. Tight Lines Always Dennis S. dave robinson
Vince: Don't we all sometimes wish for the extra 3"? I'd recommend a Sage FLi as I really like the 9' 4 wt I have, but they only make a 3wt in 7'6". They do make an 8' 4 wt, but that would mean buying a new line. Another option would be a Loomis GL3 - I see Fish Tales still lists a 3 wt 8 ft If it's like my 5 wt 9' in how it casts, it beats the St Croix for smoothness and backbone without sacrificing a soft presentation. Loomis also offers a Metolius 3wt 8' in a 3 piece model. I belive it comes in a presentation flex.
vince
Dennis I'll have a look at the VT2 but only if it comes in a length no longer then 7'9". I've had a 7' 3 wieght, now a 7'6 3 weight and I do think, after trying Rick's ( always a bad thing to do) I'm thinking 7'9" may be the magic bullet. Might be a good idea to ask around to see where the Grayling do head on their way to an over-winter area. Dave An extra 3" would be ideal no doubt about it...thats what the wife says anyway. Last year I did try the FLI and in a 3 weight I found it a bit fast and a bit top heavy thats why my limit is 7'9". My Sage Launch is almost the perfect small stream rod but I do want to give the St. Croix Avid a try. I've used Avid's in the past and their weight, balance, flex and feel are a perfect blend for me. I will, however have a look at the Loomis models. Vince

RangerBob
try out my new Sage VT2 4 piece 3wt and both choices were great. Cool T.R. (Trip Report). A lightweight rod is indeed the way to go for Grayling. I fished Scratch's 2wt TFO (Temple Fork Outfitters) on LSR this year and it was a hoot! He had more fun hauling in "Double Doubles" on it though... first and hopefully not the last time I've seen a guy pull out two fish at a time... six consecutive times in a row. I don't own a 3wt... but thinking about building my own light wt. rod this November when Ron Hagen starts up the rod building class. Looking forward to it.
