Spoons To Flies: “Bad Fly.. Bad Fly.. Whatcha Gonna Tye!”

October 11th, 2006

Pattern Demonstration

by Lance Taylor (Ranger “Salty” Bob)

The ultra secretive “Cop Car” series of flies was first developed and designed by Dennis Dickson (http://www.streamsideflyshop.com/members.htm), a Washington Guide to imitate an injured smolt pattern.

One of his clients named it as such c.a. 1988, not only because it should be a crime to fish with, but it closely resembles a cop car cruiser. The other fly Lance will be presenting is a slight variation called the “Night Rider” (that of course, glows in the dark).

In further researching these patterns he discovered that there are a few “Coyote Spoon Lures” out there that closely resemble these fly patterns (shown below).

In the world of the Fly Tying these days there seems to be a growing trend in adapting proven spoons, Rapala’s, Jigs, and other effective lure combinations over to fur and feather. As a recent example of this, check out Nick Pujic’s “The X-Stream Furpala” pattern in the recent (Aug/Nov 2006) issue of Canadian Fly magazine. If there is time remaining The Ranger may also demonstrate this pattern for us.

Please note: Materials and tying steps for these patterns will not be shared in the newsletter. You’ll have to show up to see the demo and be prepared to take notes.

Bump... been practicing my tying.. and have new product sample from SuperFly so I can show the third pattern.

Will also be a 'movie night'... I whipped up a 15 minute 'saltwater video slideshow'... and by 'whipped up'... I mean it only took 5 hours to produce the DVD slideshow... so hope to see you at the meeting tonight.

Sure would have loved to have been at the meeting tonight but right now and for the rest of the week I'm in Brandon, Manitoba visiting with my daughter and her husband. Very cold and windy our and SNOW is being called for...hope not.

While here I've been doing some advance research on the local lakes and streams and it sure looks like a guy could have a lot of fun here fly fishing for bows and browns on lakes and rivers. If you recall, the first annual fly fishing championships were held here a few years back. I might have to spend a few weeks here at the start of next years season.

Your right, there are some really good patterns that look and fish the way the deadly series of Raps work. I've got a few patterns in my pattern book and will tie a few up this winter....I could have used a few on the trip that Rick and I took down to the Livingstone.

Good luck tonight and see ya soon.

Vince......from Brandon, Manitoba

Tying the Cop Car should be an arresting experience!

I'll be watching you, but doing some tying of my own.

25 flies for the international swap is a LOT of flies.

I'm doing something relatively simple I call The Zipper.

How's that for a wet fly name?

Say, don't the beginner sessions start tonight?

Are Bill and Company ready?

That would mean I would be in the auditorium tonight then? My preference for giving demos is the smaller room... alas my voice don't carry well in that large room... but will try my best to speak up. I also prefer the smaller room for tying demos... more intimate... and cozy... puts the hecklers within easy striking distance too. Edited by RangerBob

LOL! I can't believe you brought popcorn for the "movie" Pauline! Too funny, hope you enjoyed the demo of the new SuperFly "X Stream Fur" product tonight. Thanks again to Super Fly for providing the new "Killer Pike Fly" materials. Let you know how the "Cop Car" and "Furpala's" work out at Wabamun this year.

RB sorry for not making it out last night was really looking forward to getting out. After moving into new home things just keep poping up to do before the snow flies. Still don't have gas so home is still a bit on the cool side. :( Haven't got the tying room set up yet but will be pulling out the vise shortly to get my international flies done (my new impoved llama leech)

See you next week (I hope!!!)::coffee::
