Dragon Troller
Hey Paul, Was it your minivan I seen at Mayatan on Sunday? I was there for 2 hours with my wife and 2 young son's. We did not flyfish though. I did land 3 pike, the boys got skunked (my 4 year old learned to cast though ). We did see lots of pike chasing schools of perch in the shallow submerged hump on the north central park of the lake. It was my first time there and I was impressed with the water clairity. The lack of powerboats was also nice. I saw someone in a blue pontoon boat and someone in a brown pontoon tube fly fishing that I thought might be you. If so how did you do? RangerBob
Where is Mayatan? Wednesday night is also Goldie night on the N. Saskatchewan River. Might just take a jaunt down there if my packing gets done for B.C. trip. Edited August 15, 2006 by RangerBob
Dragon Troller
It's southwest of Star Lake. It was supposed to have winterkilled a few years ago. There are definatley fish in it however.

Paulf
...yup...that was me and dipperdude...first time fishing mayatan, very nice lake indeed...had 4-5 hits and one nice size pike on, about 24"-26" in length...this crazy fish tail walked right up into my lap, all I saw was this huge mouth of sharp teeth coming at me...hit me in my chest, spit the hook and dropped down between the pontoons and took off like a bat out of he##...Dan had some hits also...saw lots of small perch...there were at least three other boats on the water as well... ...Dragon Troller...was that you coming in as we were floating along the east shore?... ...took a couple of pictures, no fish, but lots of lake... Dragon Troller
.Dragon Troller...was that you coming in as we were floating along the east shore?.Yep that was me, I'll definately be back here, as far as depth goes I marked a couple spots deeper than 40 feet, I did not venture to the other side of the channel either, It is likely shallower but still holds fish no doubt. Paulf
...yes, DT, it certainly is a lake that is worthy of another try...maybe next time out , we'll meet on the water...as far as the other part of the lake, a friend of mine just happened to be fishing the same time as we were, had his boys with him, they caught and released a mess load of perch...five were decent size and the rest were quite small...but they had a nice day on the water and that's all that matters... ...RB, if you make it down to the goldie hotspot tomorrow, I'll show you on my map the location on mayatan lake...tricky little lake to find, but sure is worth the effort... ...it is one of the better lake for launching water craft from...lots of insect life and chironomids galore...Dan and I also saw what looked like a worm or water snake swimming about, not very thick, about the thickness of horse hair and about five to six inches in length...does anyone out there know what this critter is?...I knew I should of taken a picture of it... ...so next time we plan on fishing mayatan, I'll post info here... Nice pics guys, and great trip report. LOL -- gotta love dancing Pike eh Dan! Paul... I'm planning to swing by Scratch's place after work to get camcorder, and afterwards by Alan's to help him affix the car topper for trip out West. I will try to swing by the Firehole to check on yah guys... but if we don't hookup, perhaps after the trip. This lake sounds worthy indeed. Thanks! PS - Is yer "Snake" one of these? Or could it in fact be a "Horsehair Worm" that fits the description of yer observation? http://www.ab-conservation.com/projects/Re...ers%20Guide.pdf (Alberta's Reptiles - Teachers Guide - 6 Snakes Of Alberta). http://www.uky.edu/Ag/Entomology/entfacts/struct/ef613.htm (Horsehair worm). WIKI: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nematomorpha "Horsehair worms, also known as Gordian worms, are members of the group Nematomorpha. They are similar to nematodes but much longer (4 inches to 2 feet) and very thin (1/80 to 1/10 inch diameter). Horsehair worms are usually found in water or wet areas such as cisterns, livestock watering troughs, streams, puddles, and even on plant foliage" [ More Google Images ] Neat Critters Indeed: "About 320 species have been described. In Spinochordodes tellinii, which has grasshoppers as its vector, the infection acts on the grasshopper's brain and causes it to seek water and drown itself, thus returning the nematomorph to water." Dragon Troller
I'm thinking about bringing the boys again. I might even bring the fly rod this time. Look for the Dad with his 2 sons in the red and silver 12' aluminum. I'll be the one trying to keep the 4 and 3 year old boys calm. :-)

dave robinson
I'm still recovering from Jet Lag, but I'm Baaaack! The trip to New Zeland and Oz was great. No fishing in Oz as time was at a premium but I did fish the Tongariro in NZ, twice. Due to all the time spent visitng the many friends we made in our year living there and touring parts of the North Island we didn't see before, the two days fishiing were sandwiched in on available days. As a result we didn't hit the optimum time for the run of fish up from Taupo. In fact, day 2 was a blank as far as fish were concerned. However, I didn't mind as it ws a beautuful clear day with clear water. There was snow on the mountains in the distance and a friendship with John Pellew to renew. We fished the Tuarngi-taupo in the morning and the Tongariro in the pm. Day one was better. Friend Derek and Russel showed me most of the famous pools on the Tongariro and I wet a line in almost all of them. The Judge's pool was the most productive for me with 2 landed and one lost. Both were landed on what the Kiwis call a "bomb", which given the amount of weight, is appropriate. Casting that in the middle fo a 2 fly rig with a "budgie" of a yarn indicator was indeed a challenge. The result as shown here was worth the effort though. Thanks to John, Derek and Russel for two fine day's fishing! Edited August 27, 2006 by dave robinson
Paulf
...DT...how did you and your kids make out today...I left earlier than I wanted to but that's just the way some things go...just the one hit today and nothing landed...still lots of perch swimming about...I wonder how this lake would fish in the evening... ...saw lots of goddard caddis flies about...a mess load of chironomids again...a few mayflies about as well...pike were chasing the small perch in the island shallows, lots of splashing at the surface and perch darting around with no sense of direction...cool to watch...and they still would not take my flies...go figure... ...hey RB...I managed to take a picture of that worm like thing at Mayatan...swims along at a very good pace...looks just like the ones in the information you provided... Dragon Troller
Paul, Me and the boys managed one fish. I had a few hits but missed them. My 3 year old decided it was fun to throw his rod in the lake and watch Daddy try to retrieve it, good thing it floats. My 4 year old landed a 28" pike all by himself. He was very happy Almost as happy as Dad ..
Paulf
...DT...looks to me like you had an awesome day...while you were fishing for fishing poles, your boys were bringing in the prize catch...I think that they had this planned ...what do you think...that would have made for a perfect picture, seeing your son land that 28" monster...congrats...
