Grinches steal, torch guide's ride

UNBELIEVABLE! Indeed, as a club we have a member in need here.. and if we can do something... we should.

That's downright dasterdly indeed. Wasn't it broken into last month too? Uhm... I was on the float trip with Barry when 'The Beast' rolled 1,000,000 KM. I took a photo of it for GM as a matter of fact. I figured he shoulda at least got a new paint job outta the deal. :D

Indeed, that vehicle was a landmark here in Edmonton and Calgary (and the butt of many jokes). The last time I actually seen it was just a few weeks ago as I was coming home from work... I passed Barry on the road near beside my place where he visits a local cigar shop.

I hope Barry recovers soon, erm I mean Santa. I feel honoured to have been aboard 'The Beast' and had a great day on the water with him here too. Good on Barry for going to the press with this... hope the bass-turds that did this to him get a lump of coal in their sock.

That's horrible news. Maybe we can put a little auction/dinner/fundraiser together in the next couple weeks? I can donate a custom rod if needed, I have a little 7', 4wt. that's half done right now. I started building it for the TU auction this spring but did not have time to finish it. I just need to wrap on the guides and it will be good to go. Let's get something going to help him out.

I agree with all that we could do something for Barry - I have spoken to others who have been on trips with Barry or know Barry and they also would be willing to do something. Any ideas, suggestions, which we would be able to put together we would support and be more than willing the chip in to help out with. Definately seems to have been targeted and do not think anyone deserves this at all. It is cowardly, selfish, and no consideration or appreciation for anyone elses belongings or talents. When you go out and destroy someones livelyhood - it destroys more than just the material things they hold. The truck may have been old and worn - but it also seemed to have and be a part of the character. No good deed goes un-noticed (especially by Santa)!!! We too enjoyed a day on the River with Barry last year - and had a great time!!! Look forward to another.

Rally time indeed I would think ......

Pauline, Iam now on board, further to your message I think as a club we should be able to do something to help one of our fellow members in time of need.

Too all who read this please come to the meeting on Wed JUNE 21, with ideas on how we can help Barry get on with life. eg donations of flies, rods and if at all possible a truck.

Just talked to Barry - He's coming to the wind up tomorrow - just scored (thanks to his family) a 99 Suburban... Needs a new back seat - but he's mobile...

Just FYI.

He also heard that someone said his boat was trashed too - however the boat is just fine - only the truck was trashed.

We just need an organizer guy.   I’ll support any effort to make things easier.  :)

I guess I'll step up to the plate here then. :D

Think of it as a flyswap for Barry... and I'll be your swapmeister... what you'll get back in return... is a warm feeling in yer nether regions... erm.. heart. Interesting... that I once played a Santa back in the Canadian.Christmas.Flyfish@I/II.Fly.Swaps a number of years back too.. and so I guess I am placing that hat on once more... for a Swap III of sorts.

Whilst Barry was out showing off his new ride in the parking lot to some members, I announced on the floor that we are seeking donations of up to a dozen flies from each of our members to give out to Barry White next week at the casting clinic.

Please use this thread for discussions on the subject, and know that Barry is without Internet access right now.. so long as we keep this under our collective hats.. it should be a total surprise to him next week.

What I asked for tonight from our members was a dozen flies, standard fare, such as yer San Juans, Prince Nymph, Elk Hair Caddis, Pheasant tails, basic Bow River trout flies, etc., etc., that we can pile into a fly box that the club will purchase to put them in. I'll take care of acquring the fly box.

ALSO, I guess I could go so far as to say... it just don't have to be a dozen. Whatever you have in your heart for it and can get together by then. If you also have old rods, fly boxes, gear, reels, lines kicking about, and see it in yer heart to part with to give a guy a hand up... that'd also be very cool.

Whatever you feel you can donate, or tye up for next week.. we'll present it to him then at the end of the course. Just come see me in the meeting room to pass me your stuff.. in a nondescript bag... and keep it hush hush. He need not know whom he got what from where.

Anyone offlist, or not a club member, a business owner, well wisher... wishing to send items his way can email me at 'lance@flyangler.ca' or send me a private message on how to get stuff to me.. to get to him. Afterall, didn't Santa treat you right over the years?

Thanks, and now... time to get to my own tying workshop I guess. No need to declare what your tying here... I'm certain he'll be pleased by whatever he can get... as he almost quite literally has nothing right now after being cleaned out.

If anyone has further thoughts on how we can assist him, feel free to discuss.

I am slow but they turn out OK. Please let me know.

>> Good morning, Lance. Thanks for the exposure you have given Barry. I have just sent off $700.00 for two days fishing. Don't know when I can go, but Barry obviously needs the money now. Maybe encourage your readership to do the same. Cash donations are one thing, but pre-paying for a trip with Barry might be another avenue to drum up some money, and get Barry fishin' ASAP. I cannot post to flyangler.ca. If you can add to your forum. It is nice everyone wishing nastiness on the crime perpertrators, but it does exactly nothing to help Barry. A day with Barry costs $350.00. 20 days prepaid equals $7,000! That will get him well on his way. With my 2, only 18 more to sell............

Most active replies here below also, uhm... needless to say.. since this has been posted... the FACA website.. and NLFTF site have both been rather busy in the traffic department. We'll see what comes of it. Anyone got more idears.. short of going to Barry and saying.. hey what do you need? Which makes sense granted.. but.. uhm.. at the same time sorta takes the surprise out of it. Indeed, this could be a phased thing.. with a dinner/fundraiser someplace down the road. Just toss yer idears.. into the hat.. we'll see what makes sense.. and can be organized. This inital call was just for flies... and perhaps any spare gear you might have. That was all.. fer next week.

http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/Forum1/HTML/017674.html

I don't think we're out here to help re-supply Barry's entire business here.. but the thought process is we're doing this personally for him. I am not certain what insurance he had / or is covered in the loss. Greg did you ask him about that by chance?

Anyways... I'll kick back and start tying my flies this weekend.

...RB...

...what time are you planning to be there tomorrow...I can't stay late...just long enough to drop off the flies...

... ...

Unfortunately, I am tied up at work... fixing mainframe hardware... so people can get groceries. I will likely be here until past midnight.

I called Jim (SnoWolf) on his cell to try get word to Pauline to see if she could collect any items donated for Barry and get them back to me. Will then get them to him later on.

Jim said he won't be there until about 7:45 PM.. so if anyone is on-list and gets this message and heads down to the meeting before then.. can you flag her down... and have her call me at work... <SNIP>. I'll be here.

Back to the fun... fun.. fun.. now.

Hey Lance - Not a problem at all - There is a great bunch of guys in the club who were willing to step up. They only requested we let them know when we present the stuff - and we take photos to post for those that can't be there. Will have to find out when Barry is available to hook up with as well. Glad to hear you will be released from hell (or should I say Alaska) -- Now - what's this I see about supper....OML what have I gotten myself into??? Pressure, pressure,.... Oh well, what the heck - you are more than welcome anytime... Later!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Just got off the phone with Barry. We're gonna meet for java and Cigars at Riverbend City Cigar about noon before he heads back down to the Bow in the afternoon. He says it's fishing really well right now too BTW.

I'll grab the camera and my cigar cutter and report back to y'all.
