Subject: Alberta Klave 2006

Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2006 21:46:41 -0600

It seems like only yesterday that we had our first FF@-related conclave in Alberta, down on the Crowsnest in 1995. Since then, we've met most summers on some Alberta river, caught fish, lied a lot and tried to burn enough wood so as to be visible from space. Lets hope this year is no different!

This message announces the 2006 Alberta Klave, being held once again in southern Alberta. The dates will be August 17-20 and the location will be the Racehorse Creek campground, about 25 km north of Crowsnest on the Forestry Trunk Road. For long-distance travelers, it's about 2 hours

driving south from Calgary (the closest international airport). There's a very pretty creek running right past the camp site and all of southern Alberta's blue-ribbon water is easilly dau-trip-able from this location - the Crowsnest, the Oldman drainage, the Bow. Even SE BC's famed Elk River is within an easy drive. The perfect location for a weekend of fish, flies and friends (old and new).

A fly swap and a Saturday night potluck will be part of the fun. More details on these later.

Most of the regular crew has already told me they would be there and I am hoping to see some faces from the past come a'Klaving again (hear that Jim, Scott, Eli & Tom?). I also hope to see a few new faces in the crowd. If you have never had the pleasure of fishing southern Alberta, maybe this should be your year.....

If you plan on attending, or would just like some more info, please drop me an email. Hope to see you there!

Going to try real hard to make this Klave. I had coffee this morning with Brian and he says this southen Klave is a lot of fun. He also told me about your up-coming salmon fishing adventure...you guys are going to have a blast.

I'd like to get down south before the Klave to scope things out...we'll see if work or stuff gets in the way though. Bob Creek eh...gotta love it.

Vince

PS. I'm going to give Vince Creek another try this Sunday to see if it's gotten any better. Are you heading to the R H on Sunday?

I just posted the update below on FF@ & CANFF@ this evening. I'm going down to the Livingston River & "Bob Creek" tomorrow to check things out. I'll try to post some comments later in the week.

If you are coming to the Klave, or even just thinking about it, please drop me a line at jim_and_dorothy@hotmail.com. I'd like to get an approximate count of attendees in the next week or two. Also, look at the questions below & let me know your preference.

Our annual Alberta get-together is just a month away and I thought it was time to remind everyone again. This year's event will be hosted from the Racehorse Creek Campground (located about 25km north of Coleman on the Forrestry Trunk Road) from August 17-20. This location was chosen because it is less than 15 minutes from at least 3 of Alberta's finest trout streams and day-trippable to every water worth fishing in the southern half of our province. Heck, there's even fish in Racehorse Creek, which flows right by the campground. I was down that way a month ago and all the rivers look like they've come through runoff (which was light this year) very well. I'm going to fish the Livingston tomorrow so if you want recent details, send me an email.

In past years, there has been a lot of organized fun and I just haven't had much time to organize this year. I have a couple of questions for likely attendees:

1) Is anyone interested in a fly swap? Last year's was a great success but we only have 30 days to tie & it is prime fishing (& lawnmowing) season. If a good number are interested, I was thinking about tying with the theme of "A pattern that is new to you" - something that you heard about, read about or were shown that you have not tied before. Thoughts?

2) Is there interest in a Saturday night pot-luck dinner? In previous years, Joy Lutz has made the Saturday night dinner an event all of itself. Joy may not be making the trip this year, because August is a very busy time at her shop. If she doesn't make it, do we want to have a communal meal, or just mourn her absence with scotch and go hungry?

3) Finally, it is tradition that we do a wide ranging scotch tasting on Saturday night as well. Feel free to bring a bottle of your favourite. If you don't drink scotch, bring a bottle anyway & the others will drink (and critique!) it anyway. Wally is particularly fond of Lagavulign...

For those returning from last year, you will sadly note that the FF@ gnome and afro barbie will be unable to attend this year, due to a prior engagement.

If you are coming, or just interested in finding out more, please drop me a line so I can get an approximate count. 30 sleeps and counting....

Jim... the five of us will likely be down Saturday afternoon or evening... hopefully in time for the Pot Luck... but definitely in time for the Scotch tasting.

30 flies in 30 days... might be doable. :whootwhoo:

Brian... says.... Klave is a lot of fun.

That's just rumour and heresay... started by someone.. ohh... I dunno by whom on the Internet. We've never had any fun at these Klaves.. none whatsoever.. at anyones real expense that I can recall over the past 10 years... from what I can recall that is.

I am sorry to hear that the Gnome and Flyfisher Barbie will not be in attendance this year. It will just be no fun at all now... guess we need to bring our own mascot this year... as "Klem The Klave Bear" got arrested and deported in 2005.

I am going to try and make it down there.

I had a load of fun on the last one I went to.

Can I bring port instead of scotch????? The only problem is that I do not know how well it will mix with five-a-live...... :drinked::barf:

I will be there unless that darn workin gets in the way!!! :kicks:

Doing something like that *mixing Scotch & FA* might get you banned from future Klaves... although... it might be the only way to make Lagavulin palletable. I'm still not game to try it either way though.. as it would kill the taste of the Five Alive which is far superior. Edited by RangerBob

Guys

The Klave sure comes at an opportune time. I was planning to head down to fish the Crow and area in early September with a buddy of mine (T.H.) that lives in the area. So now it looks like I'll have the pleasure of fishing the area twice.

Count me in on attending the Klave. Should be there late afternoon to early eve on the friday. I'll be sending Jim Fox a quick email to let him know that I'll be there as well as as to let him know of my preference for Southern Comfort instead of that swill they call scotch.

Should be a great time.

What area of Van Isle are you guys fishing?

Are you fishing the East side for Pinks? If so I'd head past the crowds around Nile Ck, the Oyster and the Campbell.

Much more pleasant fishing up at the Adam R. estuary (just past Sayward) or better yet, keep going to Port McNeill and fish the Cluxewe or Quatse in Port Hardy,

I prefer the Coho fishing that the West side offers in late August or September, if you have a boat. Ucluelet and Tofino should both be doing well and offer large sheltered coves and inlets. Bamfield would be hot and so would the open ocean out of Port Renfrew.

I'll be out at Port Renfrew August 25 - 28 with a selection of 6 through 9 weights. Mainly targeting Coho and Black Bombers but sure won't pass up tossing the 9 weight if we find some Springs around the surface bait balls.

It can get a little rough out on the Swiftsure banks if your in a smaller boat and coming out of Bamfield or P.R. Probably best to hit Nitinat Lake on the rising tide. We'll be on a 35' Bayliner which makes the swells a little easier to handle. The GPS and radar are nice to have if/when the fog rolls in. :boat:

Looking forward to drinking all your Scotch again guys :D Anyone heading going to be staying at the Racehorse Ck campground on the Thursday night?

Was just figuring out the best way to get to Racehorse Ck. Campground from E-Town. Looks like down the 22, across 517 to the Gap and South a bit to Racehouse. Of course, if yer Terry... it's just 23KM up from the Crowsnest. Nuhice.

RB -- I recommend staying on Hwy 2 from Calgary until you get to Nanton, then cut over on Hwy 533, which hits Hwy 22 at the Chain Lakes campground. Then as you say, it's Hwy 22 down to Waldron's Corner and then Hwy 517 through the Gap. It's a beautiful trip if you get the right weather :):) -- here's hoping. Terry
