Looking for Lake info

Dragon Troller

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Looking for any info on the following lakes as there are some I have not fished in 20+ years and some I have never fished. Specific info I am looking for relates to fish size and winterkill/summerkill status.

Any help would be appreciated.

1. Sauer Lake (never fished)

2. Chickakoo (been 20+ years)

3. Salter's lake (stocked in 2005 and heard rumour of aeration project)

Feel free to pm me if you want to keep secrets.

I would appreciate any info anyone has.

Thanks

DT,

I last fished Sauer and Chickakoo about 6 years ago. Sauer is usually stocked with RB's, and Brookies were stocked in the latter (which I've taken through the ice there before). Since Muir has opened, I haven't bothered going to these spots.

You might refer to these previous years stocking lists for PP2 here to see what's be done:

I haven't fished these in quite a while myself as well, but I have heard reports.

Chickakoo - Used to be mainly brookies and almost impossible to catch. I heard that they were changing the stocking, but looking a the list I see a whole swak of brookies (26,000) went in last year, with a smaller number of larger rainbows. Previous two years saw about 12,000 of each stocked. I suppose one might try to catch stunted brookies or possibly large rainbows on a brookie immitaiton.

Sauer - I last fished this about 10 years ago and caught a 5 lb rainbow. Loos like they stock about 6000 rainbows each year, so somebody must be catching a few. The problem with Sauer is actually getting into the lake through the loon sh!t. I was talking to a fellow about 2 weeks ago who said he did OK there last year (no details) but almost drowned trying to leave.

Salters - Never fished this one. Not even sure exactly how to get to it, other than it's around Onoway. Somebody at work mentioned it last year and said he did OK on sockies late in the year. The stocking list says 16,000 rainbows last year, none for the two years prior, which probably confirms that aerators were just installed. Might be worth a shot if I could find it.

Thanks Guys,

I have reviewed the stocking lists as well.

Salter's is just south of Onoway and can be located via "Toporama" (google it)

Mostly interested in Chickakoo because it used to be a really nice lake, With low water levels I am really unsure what it is like now, Guess I'll just have to give it a try one day.

I was also under the impression that the perch in Spring were illegally introduced but after looking here it turns out that maybe they are just remnants of previous stocking?

Chickacoo is best fished in winter. I think its due to the fact the lake is faily shallow and get very murky in summer.

As for sauer.... If the fish over wintered then its a blast to fish... lots of hungry rainbows.... if you fish to the right of the launching area, fish up against the shore... cast to the reeds and strip retrieve. if you fish to the left, there is some cool under water weedbeds....

Good luck

Ditto... hunting the Internet for more info. Sound like it might be worth taking a drive by there this summer. Hmmm.. wonder which group volunteered to make that work happen -- uh -- how about "Onoway & District Fish & Game Association" perhaps? Yup, confirmation of areation project here - funding anyways.

It's listed here in this outdoors book:

Will check my topo maps for the area when I get home tonight. Bilby Natural area is also nearby.. I think I have an idea which pond it might be.. wanna double check though.

Erm, ferget a nights sleep... I re-prototyped their whole domain in a coffee break... hmm... and I spelt 'Business Opportunities' correctly on mine too... added a new section call 'Recreational Opportunities'... indeed... more field research is needed here.

Drive 1.6 km south from Onoway on range road 22 then east 0.6 km. You will then be at the south end of the lake. I don't know if this is the access point but it is the closest road to the lake I can find on my topos.

Might check it out tonight.

Took a trip to see the lake tonight. Bumped into Dragon Troller. Nice to meet you.

The lake is approximately 700metres * 250-300metres. Depth unknown but a fellow out there mentioned 55 feet.

Tonight being quite windy, I was surprised to see the lake was relatively calm.

Threw a sinking line in with a #8 wooly on and got a hit on the first try. Nothing after that in 10-12 casts.

This is a no-smoking lake. The methane smell is pretty rank.:marsh:
