Gravity Orange Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Does anyone have an extra materalli whip finish that they want to sell. I have checked with all the fishin holes and wholesale sports, and they are all out of stock. Thanks Quote
DennisS Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 I will ck and see what I have around the fly tying room and let you know tonight or tomorrow. Tight Lines Always Dennis S Quote
albertabowhunter Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Did you check the Fishing Center??? Quote
RangerBob Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Brian (was it?). I'll look and see if I have one laying around. I can't use this one or the Thompson to save my life. My whip tool of choice is the modified rotary whip. So if I have one... it's yours at the next meeting. Let yah know when I get home this evening. Lance Quote
Gravity Orange Posted January 26, 2006 Author Posted January 26, 2006 It is Brian yes, and The fishing centre/ hole/ wholesale are all sold out. Rotary whip finish? Isn't that the same thing as a rotary materalli? (that is what I'm looking for)....I have a thompson, its just (supposed to be) easier to whip finish around bead heads with a materalli...so I've heard. Cheers guys Quote
pacres Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 I have an extra I can give you. I don't use mine much anymore, opting to use a hand whip finish or even just a few half hitches. I did some video on the subject a while back that may help you learn the technique. http://copperfly.net/fly_tying_videos.php I'm working on new video and images for articles on Flyangler.ca, so keep an eye out for them. Darren beat me out to tooting his own horn there. He shows a Materelli and Thompson on his page with cool video. I can ALMOST use the Materelli - but sorry I don't own one anymore. If you hold off buying, we can bring in all three next week and you can decide which you like best. Once you've tried the Modified Rotary Whip -- you won't go back. Yes, much easier then the rest IMHO. http://copperfly.net/whipfinish.php Uhm, here was the scan I made for you.. comparing the Thompson Whip Finisher (LEFT) and The Modified Rotary (RIGHT I own and use. I much prefer the Modified Rotary (bought at The Fishin Centre) and I'd be truly lost without it. So like when I lost one at a show -- I bought two -- and now own a backup. Anyone in need of a Thompson can hunt me down at the next meeting. Ugh... I just can't figure it out. As a real BACKUP -- when you can't find anything -- learn this move. http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/6392/whip.html (Hand Whip Finish) Edited January 27, 2006 by RangerBob Quote
agrombacher Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 Hey Gravity Orange, Save your cash and buy another good set of scissors. Learn to do the whip finish with your fingers. It takes a bit of practice at the start, but works equally well. I've taught my now 10 year the hand whip finish about 3 years ago. Give it a go. Cheers, Alberta Al Quote
Gravity Orange Posted January 27, 2006 Author Posted January 27, 2006 Sounds good guys, I'll hold out on buying one and check out your guys "stash" next week. Thanks Nice video's pacres Quote

RangerBob Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 Back at home now... getting ready to sit down at the vice this afternoon. Ugh, so many swaps, shows to tie for, so little time. Uhm, TFC didn't have any Modified Rotary Whips in stock -- or grr any of the hooks I needed. Oh well, if you like mine it's your's (will bring my spare) and find another. Quote
flytyer Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 RB just want to see one in action just for my own reference. I'll see you at the show and make a judgement from that. I'm sure I could find one Calgary if I should want one. Thanks though for your previous offer. Quote
