RangerBob
Scratch, how's the back of your head from casting in those gale force winds today? Glad I took those First Aid courses this week - don't forget your chapaeu next time. Oh yeah, those furled leaders you made turn a fly over real nice too. They are the poo man! http://www.flickr.com/photos/scratch/sets/473659/show/ PS - Two dozen roses goes a long way, for when you buy too many books... or stay out too late catching fish. pacres
It looks like you have a pretty good setup for making the furled leaders. How difficult was it to set up ? What did you use for leader material?
RangerBob
Oh yeah a report now: "Moronvile" (just ask Scratch about the Morons that blocked the muddy roads)... is ripe with green algae blooms in the water. Still we seen fish rise and had a few hits. Cardiff had lots of rising fish, and yes, my "Cardiff Special" still works there... got them on the first cast. RangerBob
It looks like you have a pretty good setup for making the furled leaders. How difficult was it to set up ? What did you use for leader material? It must be a secret now until the Fall. Or perhaps until http://flyANGER.ca opens up in three days - which is actually "Road Rage" in the sky. (Yeah, I should scoop up that domain today.. hmmm.). Scratch gave a demonstration at the Klave though to those who attended. Jep, gotta build one of these boards real soon now. Those leaders casted like a dream out at Muir today where many fish were caught on my Cardiff Special pattern shown above.
dave robinson
Scratch gave a quickie demo of how to build furled leaders at the Klave. Looks like it might not be too hard to do. Hopefully he will do one in the fall for the club. I did a quick web search and found a page that describes the technique, but not with very clear instructions. Having seen Scratch's demo I could figure it out. I may give building the board a go this weekend. After all, I have to find some use for my power tools. They do unroll nicely, with no fly attached at least. I'd like to try one out with a big fuzzy dry on it and also one with a tungsten beadhead or a clouser minnow. Scratch
True enough - but sometimes - having enough of the background to ask for details rather than the 'broad' subject can save a lot of effort, and unneeded posts. That said - FlyAngler will have a long and in-depth article about it next month. To answer your question - furled leaders are leaders made by furling the leader material to produce a leader with no memory, good strength and excellent turnover... That help? Takes a lot (4 pages and counting) to really explain what they are. In short - they are the best of knotted, tapered knotless, and braided leaders - in one. albertabowhunter
being a tapered leader, wouldnt that make it a thicker leader causing fish to be scared off? I was always taught the smallere the better , "WHEN" it comes to fishing...
Scratch
There is a great deal of discussion regarding that. If fish were scared off by something near a food item - than explain the following: How many leaves do you see floating down the river? How many sticks do you see floating down the river? How many times have you gotten hit's on an indicator? How many times have you gotten hit's on the leader to flyline knot? In reality - when a fish has keyed in on a food item, it's unlikely that they could see more than 2 feet from the food item (tunnel vision / cone of vision / whatever) Certainly - I've now fished the furled leader with a 2 ft tippet with a nymph and gotten fish, I've also used it with a 10ft level section of 4x tippet, and turned it over. Needless to say - we're using mono here - and even when using thread - it would only look like a chunk of algae floating in the water. You'll have to make one in the fall, or later in the summer when the article is published on FlyAngler.ca in July. The board in the photo is a Jig for letting you lay out the leader material. It takes about 115 feet of material to create a 7' leader - and the jig lets you lay it out in a controlled fashion. Oh yeah - and lastly - the cardiff special catches fish. pacres
Pacres - if you haven't already - just check the article in Queue at FlyAngler - it should help. The article explains it very nicely. It should be pretty easy to make these after reading your article.
albertabowhunter
Your correct... I forgot that you attach the tippet to this leader as well. Are these Furled leaders more pricy than a regular leader? If so, and assuming they are, how much more? 50%? 100%?
pacres
If your making your own with uni thread, it'll cost you the 2.00 for the spool of thread. That's cheaper than most leaders. Definatly cheaper than the ones you want to use If you can't find the 200 yard spools needed to make the 7ft leaders, just ask to have a few brought in at the shop your at. Scratch
To purchase - you'll have to go to Europe - where they'll cost about 15 pound sterling (about $30.00 CDN) there are a few places in the US and Canada to buy them - but they're around $20.00 - if you can find them. The 50 yard spool of Uni 6/0 is either .99 cents, or 1.99 depending on where you get it. This will make 1 leader. (Yes - only 1)... Another option is the Nylon invisible sewing thread (210yd spool) that you can get for a buck at the dollar store (this is what I use most, and 2nd most - Uni thread in Olive with a fire orange strike tip.) albertabowhunter
Thanks for the info.... I may look into trying to make one... If I have time, Whichj I dont have alot of lately. How thick are these leaders when finished? Also, How hard are they on the guides on your rod? being woven I would imagine over time they would cut grooves into the guides. Also, how smooth is the transfer between fly line and leader? Ocassionally you have to reel in past the fly line to land a fish, so there for if the fish runs, is there any bind which may cause the tippet to break? later,
Scratch
Once you get the hang of it - you can create a braid for the top loop (which loop to loops on your fly line) and you can weave the tippet loop in - so no knots whatsoever to get tangled up in. As for cutting into the guides? You'd have more chance of that with a mono or fluoro leader than with thread or nylon. As for thickness - you're about the same as fly line (or less - probably about a 0x at the top) the tip is six strands of approximately 6x tippet (if your using nylon - less for thread.) It's more or less irrelevant though - I've made a 38lb test leader from 12 lb fluorocarbon that is seamless to the fly line - so it's not a sweat. albertabowhunter
38 lbs? from thread? what you fishing for? Tarpon? Thanks for the info...
Scratch
38 lbs? from thread? what you fishing for? Tarpon? Ummm... I've made a 38lb test leader from 12 lb fluorocarbon that is seamless to the fly line - so it's not a sweat. So - no - not thread - and it makes a good pike leader actually.
