Doc
I received this e-mail from Jill who is a youth group leader at Foothills Alliance Church in Calgary. There are two e-mails missing from this (not sure where they went) but in a nutshell they would like some fly-fishing lessons and I would hate to take money from them. Is this something we as a club would be interested in doing? Please read the following so you have some idea of what is going on and then respond with your opinions. Thanks,Doc May 09,2005 Hi my name is Jill Kotkas and I am a youth group leader at Foothills Alliance Church in Calgary. At the end of June we are planning to take our Gr.9 and 10's on a camping trip to the Edmonton area. Our girls want to go to West Edmonton mall to do some shopping and the boys want to do some fishing. I was wondering if you could let me know where some good fishing would be in about an hour radius from Edmonton and what we would be fishing for. Thanks for your help.My e-mail is jill_kotkas@yahoo.com or my phone number is 403-239-7847 Cheers, Jill Kotkas Your best bet would be Muir Lake. It is stocked with Rainbow trout and has special regulations on it (one fish per day over 50cm, no bait). These regulations help increase catch rates. There is an education center there that teaches anglers what simple life forms trout feed on and how an angler can imitate these life forms as well. Here is the web site for more information. http://www.etfc.ca/muir.htm Here is an article I wrote about Muir Lakehttp://mikemonteith.tripod.com/flyfishingedmonton/id30.html If you do want to use bait, I recommend Hasse Lake. You can find directions here on my websitehttp://mikemonteith.tripod.com/flyfishingedmonton/id3.html Cheers,Mike (Doc) Monteith May 24, 2005 Mike, Hello, I apologies for the delay in my reply but I have been swamped with other activities that we've been having at church, school, work etc. We have decided to take your advice and head out to Muir Lake to take the kids fishing. We are still deciding on a campground but hopefully that will come together soon. I mentioned as an idea having you come out and teach some fishing lesson. I have deleted the reply but there were some mentions about you and some friends from your fishing club that might be interested in joining you. Like I said before cost is the only thing that would cause us not to want to do that. We are going to have about 15 kids that are going to be fishing. They can easily be broken into smaller groups to have a lesson for about an hour. We have two groups coming up two different times with about the same number. Unfortunately they are in Gr. 9 and 10 so their attention span is short and anything over an hour you'd loose them to some random though. So let me know what kind of idea you have that would work. The days that we would be fishing would be June 25 and June 30th. Even if you can only make one of the two days, really any help would be great. I really do hope we can work something out, as myself, the pastor and the other leaders are really excited about all this. Cheers, Jill Kotkas
Doc
Come on guys. I thought that this is what the club was all about. Nobody wants to come out for an hour or so and help teach some kids to cast a fly rod? There is going to be about 15 kids so here is what I thought would be nice. We meet at Muir and take the kids through the education center explaining the signs we have up. Then 10 of the kids watch some flies being tied for about a half hour while 5 of the kids get instruction for a half hour. Then we rotate through the kids so every group of five gets a half hour of instruction. Anyone up for this? Any other thoughts? RangerBob
Doc, my other thoughts. A great idea, but when is it again ("end of June") - exact date? Alberta 2 uh-oh 5 Klave (last weekend) is also by chance happening on June 24-26. Sorry, I will be out of town then teaching myself to cast from a PT boat on the river. I beleive the "Club's Annual" Brazeau Dam trip on Fathers Day (June 19th) Weekend before above is also happening. A time people like to spend with their families too, save the lucky ones who let their Fathers go to that one. June 30th is the day before the July 1st long weekend also. That's a tough sell! If you can get more details hammered out on a "concrete" date for people to try and commit to, and not falling on those above I know I'd consider helping out myself. As a suggestion, perhaps Hook & Hackle in Calgary might be willing to "tackle" (pardon the pun) a casting project down there for them if refered too in advance? Perhaps not though.. they only tie secret flies. Sounds like a time commitment issue here to me really. Most members kids are also coming out of school around that time and thinking about going on vacation too. Others can proove me wrong though - it happens. Also, the emails sounds all too last "minutey" on their part too. May 9th then 24th a reply? Hmmm... What about Scratch's friend that teaches casting? They could buy an hour of his time too, or you could do same. It's not wrong to do so really. Barry makes a living at it.
Michael Dell
Mike, I'm going to be away June 25, but I'm willing to help on June 30. I can make a few calls and see if I can round up some volunteers. Sorry, I didn't see this post until today. Michael
Paulf
Doc, I would very much like to help out, but at this moment it doesn't look very promising. June 25th weekend booked with family reunion out of town and June 30th booked with company golf tournament. Being the tournament organizer, it is very difficult for me to back out. If anything changes I'll let you know. Sorry to miss out on teaching kids any thing to do with fly fishing and /or fly tying. Paulf

Sorry, I didn't see this post until today. MichaelDepending also at "what time" on Thursday, June 30th (if that's the date), I may be able to help out. Some of us have "day jobs" during the week. So, peg a time and date you're looking for volunteers, if it meshes with schedules that'll help bring folks out. Oh yeah, do these kids all have flyrods? Or are they just after "fishing lessons" in general? Are you/they looking for us to bring our flyrods along too for them to fish with? I don't even want to go into liabilities issues. DennisS
Sounds interesting. I think one of the major problems we have is equipment. Do all the kids have there own or do they want us to supply. As for price I like what Doc said price not a issue. "0" (Maybe they can supply the hot dogs & Hamburges.) Just to teach new youngsters the art is payment enough. Mike firm up dates and let see what we can do I'm sure we could get enough people to volunteer. I could do at least one of the dates not sure how many bodies each day we would need. Inconnu
I'm away on a fishing trip for a few days, but if I am here on the day they are coming, I will help out. Haven't been to the site for a bit so I missed the first post until now.
dcomo
I'll do my best to attend but same as everyone else, the date & time will have to be finalized before I can commit for sure. I do have some extra gear I can bring.
dipperdan
Hey Doc , I may be able to make it, if time and date is secured, the 25th would be my best time , I work during the week, unless, I could make it after 5:30 pm.
albertabowhunter
My question is: Do these kids really want to be there? If not you could be asking for a world of hurt. If they want to be there things will go good. The one hour thing, exellent, anything more could get painful. Your biggest issue I think is definately equiptment. As for peopel wishing to help I dont see too much of a problem for the non weekend date... as for the 24th lot of pre - commitments during the summer months.... best of luck
Doc
Jill is currently checking on some questions I had for her and I am awaiting here response. Looks like we're doing the one day thing on June 30th and not the 25th. I've talked with Michael Dell and he'll be helping out as well as helping find more volenteers. I 'll post again when I hear back from her. Cheers Doc
Doc
We have a group of about 15 kids coming up from the Foothills Alliance Church in Calgary to fish Muir Lake on June 30th. We are trying to organize an introduction to fly fishing for these young guys (grade 9 & 10). We need support from fellow club members to put this together. Here is the itinerary: Meet at Muir Lake at 11am. Go over the education center with the boys as a group. Break the group up into 3 groups. One group watches a fly tying demonstration, one group gets an introduction to the fly rod, reel, line, leader, knots and methods of fly fishing and one group gets casting lessons. Each group gets a half hour at each station. We then enjoy free hotdogs and hamburgers put on by the church. We are looking for about eight to 10 fly rods and some volunteers to help out with this as this is the first introduction to fly-fishing at our beloved Muir Lake. If you can help please post below and/or contact myself or Michael Dell. Cheers Doc
