Nicknames personal rant: I can appreciate a good nickname just like the rest but I fail to see why the need to hide identities with them. I simply don’t lend any credence to any information from someone who hides behind them. If what is being said is questionable information then it shouldn’t be disseminated even under a pseudonym. I use the Flywing handle but in my signature my given name appears in all of my posts to this list. I would personally appreciate the courtesy returned. I’m lucky to remember my own name let alone the names of people I meet only very occasionally add to that a fantasy name I’m totally screwed!! Please condescend to an old guy and his failing memory with reality as his is becoming questionable at best in “Wally World.” Fishing report: Fishing on the Babine was fantastic!! Stayed a week there then moved to the Terrace area and ran about 150km. total on several rivers. Fished only one day for Chinooks on the Kitamat River without success apparently the run is not as strong as expected or they managed to sneak through early undetected (we hope) but in all Rodseth and I had a fantastic two weeks. I took about 1100 photos that I’m still trying to sort through.

Been raining out here for a solid two days and still raining this morning water everywhere. I'd pick a lake.

We head out to the Babine River on the 17th of June and will be gone for about two weeks. Alberta Al is talking about coming out this weekend for a round of fishing. Other than that I don't have any plans but have to allow for Joy's whims.

I wouldn't want to deprive you of the adventure of going and looking let alone the satisfaction of finding, if I gave you the coordinates to a honey hole. BUT if you want to come and look with me and willing to share the fuel costs something may be arranged. There are one or two places I haven't been and would like to go too. Interested anyone???

Minnows are #1 on the menu, I like patterns with big heavy eyes. Caught them on dragon flies and leaches too but put it on the bottom.

Thanks George, they thank everyone who provided info and flies at the beginning but don't credit anyone in the fly pattern index. I see Reg Denny is mentioned in the Foreword too. Must have been in a hurry to get it on the shelves. Wally

Hi All; found a paperback book called "Fishing Jasper National Park Special Fly Patterns Illustrated" by Russell Thornberry & Peter Grimwood. They didn't include a publishing date. Anyone have this book? Any ideas on a date for it? Wally

Welcome sir, you'll find a good bunch here! SO 50 years eh? I'm not going to beat around the bush. What are your favourite flies??? A go to for searching? Nymphing? Streamer? Dry? Terrestrial? And the question everyone wants to ask but proper deportment restrains us; where do you fish??? Regards, Wally
-
Yes that would be the ones I've dealt with in the past. I believe the impeller pumps water continuously and the thermostat opens and closes as required. The squirt is there to indicate that the impeller is functioning. Regards, Wally
-
Any outboard I've ever had spit water continuously and when it stopped it was trouble. Allan and Michael can attest to that one; think we had to drift back about 6 or 7 miles from the back side of nowhere BC bear country because the squirt stopped. The water pump works on a little rubber impeller that sucks up water for coolant and when that stops you run the risk of bigger problems. Sand will wear it down and finally the impeller blades are too flimsy to push water. I wouldn't run it again until it gets the OK form someone who knows for sure. I've heard good things about the people out at Alberta Beach. I've bought parts from them and they were reasonable as compared to others. Regards, Wally Lutz

I'd send mine back to the manufacturer with that large of a hole. that way it would be done right. If you're set on self help my suggestion would be to use Aqua Seal and a backing patch on the inside of you wader. Maybe one of those patches ya can put on the knees of kids jeans. Could be iron on patches?? Let us know how it comes out eh.

Another word about "Simple Flies" by Pfeiffer as to it's worth as a tying resource; found a couple of tying treatments that could possibly have been added to the "Benchside Reference." The first is the way he does a woven-tube body on a saltwater streamer looks to me like it could add a little translucence to the body construction and the other is again a streamer I like the way he handles the very long extended body. A quick look in the "Benchside" didn't come up with a match for either technique. Can't recall for sure but may have seen it on a Pike pattern.

http://www.midcurrent.com/articles/gear/cutchin_kalax.aspx I just ordered one of these "KalaX" doojiggers. Looks like a good idea; I'm forever filling the bath to test my experiments. The thing produces a current; apparently at differing speeds too. Should make it easier to determine if I'm using the right material for the application. Good post Dave!

It was 39.00 Kanuck and I think a good buy; a few patterns of the couple hundred listed I haven't see so it works for me. Best bet would be to find one on the shelves and have a look. Also picked up a copy of ROD RAGE by Rhea Topping, "The ultimate guide to Angling Ethics." Never hurts to bone up on my manners on the water. I know we all run into unethical behaviour and it can spoil a good day. Here's a place to start a little conformity in our fishing interactions. 33.95 Jack money so I over spent a little but nice additions to my library.

Been to Big "E" and back spent my Jack money 75.00$ on additional material for my library! Found a new book at Chapters by C. Boyd Pfeiffer, 2005, SIMPLE FLIES "flies you can tie with three materials or less (exclusive of hook & thread)." Got a few of everything in this one streamers. dries, terrestrials, poppers, nymphs, wets and saltwater flies too. 178 pages with a pile of flies and illustrations; haven't had a complete read yet but sure fits well with this topic.

Tradition is hard to break we see it in the flies we drown and in the tools we use. We can use graphite (black dress) or bamboo (Vicky) what ever works.

Isn't that when the bait been stolen? Can't wait for June and the Babine. Is it too soon to know yet if you're interested?
-
Agreed, but if tyed within the outlines I suggest exact duplication of bug life is probably not an option though far be it from me to say what anyone fishes with. I imitate not duplicate so if a new material can enhance a pattern I'm willing to give it a try, or a new technique. I've noticed that last years pattern sometimes just doesn't work as well as it did the previous year and then I need to find another that will. Yet the old is kept and used again another day. It's the new ones the experiments that I turn to looking for "Shuptons Fancy." Not enough hours in a day just too much fun doing what I want to. Miss work never!

Don, the quickie or guide patterns are great, durable and effective but tying flies is almost a separate discipline from our fishing. For many tying is enjoyed equally as much as a day on the water. The procurement of materials, new techniques and the creation of our own designs that fool a fish or fail are as necessary as the fish to our fullest enjoyment of this contemplative pastime. I see nothing untoward about using numerous materials as long as the pattern doesn’t become choked. Too much material even in simple patterns will hinder the translucence or breathing ability inherent in the material and in the other parts of the fly. The sparse quality that allows a pattern to breath/move in the water must remain present to have a successful pattern that can trigger a feeding response. Also the translucent qualities of materials, another trigger, must not be sacrificed with the application of too much material. The silhouette each material produces is another trigger our imitations require to be winners. So using all the materials we think are need on our creations is artful if we build our patterns with these thoughts foremost. Your reduced patterns are successful because they follow these principals allowing the pattern and material to work its magic. That said, we know there are still no guarantees when it comes to a hungry or finicky fish.

WOW!!! Nice fish! Was it released?

Hi James, "Pike on the Fly" by Barry Renolds & John Berryman is a good one to have if you're hooked on pike with flies. Then there's "Saltwater Flies: Over 700 of the Best" by Deke Meyer; any of the flies in this book will take pike. My preference pike flies utilise rabbit strips for durability and best swimming motion. Feathers tend to get chewed up after a few fish and need to be replaced while the rabbit hangs in there and takes the abuse that pike give a fly.

Hi, some Elk belly off the Bull, please. Can never have too much. Urine stained is the best. Let me know if your successful.

Hi, I have a Bucks Bags Bronco with stainless steel frame Love IT! Had it for about 6 years now and PTBoats are the only way to go. We had a Fish Cat 9 on loan from Darrell Johnston (Fishin’Hole) at the Embarrass Klave a few weeks ago. Michael Dell tried it out along with a few others and then Michael bought a PTBoat too. I tried it and it compared favourably with my Bronco the only thing I wasn’t keen on is the steel frame. They need a bit more maintenance than stainless or aluminum but then it’s stronger than aluminum and if you’re a larger dude like me that is a consideration.

Simple but effective ingenious. I like it. Wonder how many others would purchase your invention? I haven't really looked for an off the shelf wheel; are there some? I've seen the double wheels on boats and canoes but nothing for a toon. Very nice addition.
