  1. I agree with you, Garhan, well put. But it seems we were outvoted. Lol, how's that SAFFL forum coming?
  2. Haha! Dan's the man to beat for post of the year! Thanks for the input, guys.
  3. Way to go, Jim! Can't wait to see the fly! I really missed being there this weekend.
  4. I, well we, were asked for some fishing tips on Rock Lake. The mandate of our club is to foster the sport. To me, the idea is the more I can help someone have a good time, the better the chances that we'll gain another ally for our natural resources. I've suffered the consequences before; arriving at a favourite spot to find it crowded. I still think it's the right thing to do. This forum could allow many people to benefit from our knowledge, but at the same time, I don't want to outrage any friends of mine. Thoughts?
  5. Hi Paul! I actually just spoke to Randy at The Fishin' Hole, and I was going to email you tonight. I'm the fellow. But this has made me wonder, where do the NLFT forum regulars stand on the free sharing of such information? As in, posting those details right here. I know a lot of people consider that taboo, but it seems to me like the right thing to do. I'd like to run a poll first, if you don't mind. Post or PM, I'll tell you everything I know long before the ice breaks up.
  6. We're you planning to compete, Roy? It sounds like my team from last year won't be able to make it, so I'm considering putting together one of my own. Not that I would necessarily be the captain.
  7. Yeah, I was pretty sure you were joking, Ken. For my part, I figure all the fish pull tickets I've bought over the years might be close to double the retail value of this rod, plus all the raffle tickets, donations to auctions, and my time. I promise you, when I'm catching fish on my new Winston next year, it'll be guilt free. I won't even feel bad when the boys give me a hard time about putting a cheapo reel on it.
  8. Ken asked a good question, and I forgot one thing. To adjust my nymphing rig to shallower water, I'd switch my anchor to a smaller, lighter, and/or bushier fly.
  9. You know, I think if I tally up every fish pull I've taken part in, I still got that rod at about a 90% discount. And yes, I'm still smiling.
  10. Thanks for playing. Try again!
  11. Not me. This summer I saw one on a ladies lap I had figured at eight pounds, just before it kicked back into the water. And just last week a friend caught and weighed a six pounder.
  12. The fish pull rod is a Winston Boron 8-1/2', 3wt. Believe it or not, I haven't even taken it out of the tube yet.
  13. I definitely notice it running smoother and faster. Thanks.
  14. I've had one for a while and never used it. Then one of the guys at the nationals explained that it prevents the fish seeing the flash of your teeth. Makes sense, since the white of a fish's mouth can give away their position to us.
  15. Jim, that inReach looks like a lot of fun, and better in many ways. But I'm kind of bony, and I think I'd break that thing if I fell on it. As a last line of defence, I think the SPOT is a better tool because it's just about bulletproof. I've sent lots of OK messages from all over northwestern Canada, and I've never had it so much as hesitate to sync up and send, even when guys couldn't get their satellite phones to work. And my first set of batteries lasted over three years.
  16. Never backtrack in your own footsteps over sand or mud. When water is nearby, what was solid the first time you stepped on it, might have liquified when you lifted your weight. I don't know what the phenomenon is called, and I think conditions have to be just right so it doesn't happen often, but when it does you have very little warning, and it really sucks. I'm glad you're okay, Roy.
  17. Now you've got me confused, Gary. I'd be interested to read more, because everything I've seen and read so far supports primarily upstream fishing. This includes Czech, Polish, Spanish and French style nymphing, and was confirmed for me at the Nationals.
  18. You already said too much! You're getting me all excited! Seriously, as Jim and Gary said this was a fantastic experience, and I can't wait to do it again.
  19. Ant fall. Mating flight and colony dispersal. Potentially the best dry fly fishing of the year on the NSR.
  20. We've been offered an opportunity to promote the club at the upcoming Cabela's event on Saturday the 17th, tying flies with kids and beginners from 10 until 4. I won't be able to make it, but if anyone else can for even just part of that time, please let me know.
  21. The Edmonton kit is not currently in that location. For the time being, to sign it out volunteers will have to contact me directly.

  23. Dennis, I really don't know what their plans are. Vince, I think the stickers are a decent idea, but what about all the people that have already bought their licence? Pretty sure that's the majority. As far as I know, word of mouth is the best we've got, for now.
