Dismal Creek Blitz #3
Following up on our successes earlier this year, we've decided it will be very worthwhile to send some teams out in August. Recently we've had several more adult grayling captured on Dismal Creek. One batch above the log jam had several re-captures of previously tagged fish, and one trip last weekend (below the logjam) had several adults, but none were previously tagged. Water temperatures were much cooler this weekend and fishing was good.
We are planning third Blitz on Saturday August 15. Our objective is to capture as many Arctic Grayling on Dismal Creek as possible. Teams will be paired up for PIT tagging and recording fish that have been tagged in the past. We will record data such as size and location for each fish caught as well as collection of fin clips.
  • There will be some difficult locations (such as the log jam) and some easy locations at bridge crossings.
  • Our club members may be joined by ESRD biologists from Edson (and maybe some from Red Deer) for this event.
  • On Saturday, we’ll be meeting at the Tim Horton’s in Spruce Grove – the one by Canadian Tire and Staples on Highway 16A. We will meet at 7:45, distribute maps and radios and plan to leave at 8:00. (Come earlier for coffee or breakfast).
  • The club provides fuel cards for drivers on this trip.
Please let us know if you are available. We`ll establish some groups and prepare map kits ahead of time.

After several weeks in Europe (no fishing, but lots of pork knuckles with dark beer in Prague, and unlimited wine on the Main, Mosel & Rhine rivers) it was great to get back out on Dismal with Dipper and Pickles for a day of, "Grayling with Tenkara". Caught lots of grayling but mostly of the juvenile variety, which holds good for the future. None of the adults caught had previously been tagged. A few Rockies were caught as well.

  • 2 weeks later...
The forecast is not looking great for tomorrow. It will be cooler, and several mm of rain is forecast for tonight, but tapering off in the morning with 30-50% chance of small amounts of rain through the day.
I will probably still go and plan to be at Tim Horton's at 7:30. Eight people previously indicated interest, we'll finalize groups at 7:45 tomorrow morning.
