Fish Trap Status

I got this update from Jim today. The target date to remove the trap is Saturday. Please reply if you can help out. KenHi everyone, As of this afternoon we have not captured any fish in the trap, which is quite surprising and more than a little baffling. The water temperature in the last two days has reached 6 C (and is increasing quickly with this warm weather). At these temperatures grayling and sucker movements should be peaking or be on the down slide. Jess Reilly,Tiffany Hnatiuk, Shona Derlukewich, and Jessica Kidd checked out a major log jam section about 6 km downstream from the trap this afternoon. Based on an ACA observation in 2000, indicating that the section could be a barrier, we decided to check it out. Following the site inspection we have to conclude that the section, although it is a maze of channels with large volumes of debris, cannot be considered a total blockage. It might delay the migration and would certainly become more of an issue at lower flows. It seems hard to believe that we missed the entire run of three species (i.e., moved upstream before we installed the trap) but I guess we have to consider that this is a possibility. We are going to keep the trap operating tomorrow and Wednesday in hopes that the run is later than we anticipated. Barring any significant movement of fish we will open up the trap on mid-day Wednesday (remove conduit) and come back on the weekend to remove the fence and trap from the channel, pack up and depart. I am sending out this blanket request for volunteers for Wednesday or this coming weekend (Saturday or Sunday). A similar request will go out to Trout Unlimited and other folks who have volunteered to date. Let me know as soon as possible so we can get the planning underway. Thanks. Hope you are enjoying this summer-like weather! Jim P.S. We will provide a nice lunch and refreshments for volunteers!

Unfortunately, I'm not available.

Perhaps it is worth suggesting to Jim to test his theory that the fish went upstream already. There is at least one pool that we always had luck on last year. Fishing it before the trap is taken out might just prove his theory. Of course, not catching fish there wouldn't prove anything.
