Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) has initiated the North-Central Native Trout (NCNT) Recovery Program for fish species at risk in the North-Central East Slopes. This program will focus on the development and implementation of targeted recovery actions in pilot watersheds in the Red Deer River, North Saskatchewan River, Athabasca River and Peace River watersheds. These actions are expected to improve bull trout, Athabasca rainbow trout, Arctic grayling and mountain whitefish populations over a 5 year period and are, or will be, directly linked to recommended actions within the Athabasca Rainbow Trout and Bull Trout Provincial Recovery Plans. Please visit the NCNT web page for more information.

I am writing to invite you and your membership to attend the NCNT public information sessions being held in Edmonton and Calgary, December 2017. These sessions will provide a great opportunity to learn more about the program and provide ideas on how Albertans can help recover native trout. The sessions are divided into two components. Presentations and a short question period on the NCNT program will take place in the early evening, followed by a workshop where attendees will brainstorm and discuss specific actions stakeholder groups and public members can take to help recover native trout.

We are pleased to introduce Lorne Fitch as the session facilitator and key-note presenter. Mr. Fitch is an award winning biologist and is internationally recognized as a communicator, writer and teacher focusing on conservation challenges in Alberta and beyond.
