Cork Handle

Recommended Posts

I wasn't sure where to place this one but i recently inherited a St. Croix Legend rod. Unfortunately it appears a mouse made a meal out of the cork handle. Does anyone know someone locally that could repair or replace it?

TIA>

Dave

The Reel Doctor is usually the place that people go to for repairs to rods and reels in the Edmonton area.

Having said that, it is not a particularly hard thing to repair/replace a cork handle yourself. If just small bits of the handle are missing, then you can fill in the gaps with a cork dust and wood glue mixture. Let it set and then sandpaper to shape. Or depending on how much of the handle needs to be replaced, you can take the guides off and slide down replacement cork rings or a new handle, glue in place, shape as needed, and then put the guides back on.

I can guide you through the process if you wish.

I would very much appreciate any help you can give me. As soon as i uncork my next bottle of red, I'll try your suggestion to fill in the eaten area with the shaved cork. .

Ok, if what you have to fill in is not so large then you can fill it in with cork filler. This is exactly how manufacturers fill in the gaps in the cork as it is nearly impossible now to get perfect cork.

I recommend that you use a sander on your cork to get cork sawdust. Mix the sawdust with wood glue to make a thick paste. This will work better as it can be pressed into small crevices and also fill larger spaces. Overfill the gaps, and then sand to shape later.

p.s. Let the wine cork dry out before sanding.

Thanks Michael. I also found a website (Get Bit Outdoors) that sells new cork handles. Not sure if they have the one i need. Going to check further.
