That's all that will be stocked this year, Neil. 20,000 was all they had available although they are raising some for stocking next spring. Where will be dependent on what happens with aeration. The sizes you list are cm I believe. The hatchery guy at the Roundtable meeting mentioned that some are even bigger - getting close to 430cm. They've been feeding them a maintenance diet only for the past while waiting on a decision from Fisheries on where to stock them. They were probably quite hungry when they hit the ponds so will probably grow rapidly unless they end up in frying pans. Signs will be put up at each location to encourage release until this species is properly covered by the regs. Suspect though that many will be taken by ice fishing at the three locations.

I heard that the campground at Black Nugget is closed so I think the only access there is by foot until it opens. Haven't been there for many years though so could be wrong

It's great to see the start of the tiger stocking program in Alberta. Just wish that the aeration issue hadn't screwed up the plans to stock them in aerated ponds such as Muir and Beaver.

You can still park beside the pond at Black Nugget. Spent a few hours there today and can say the fish are hungry and stupid, my favorite combination.

Most put up a good fight, I thought I had some real monsters but most were around 10-14 inches. Had one around 16-19, that was a good fight.

Hi Peter,

Yes it is good news that the stocking of Tigers has started and dWaYnE reports good action. To bad that we most likely will lose all of the fish in Muir, Spring, Salters, etc(the aerated lakes) this winter.

By the way 430 cm is 169" and even Tigers can't grow that big.

Cheers,

Neil

You're right of course re the cms, Neil. Still have problems converting from the imperial system and still prefer feet, chains, furlongs and leagues!! How else can you properly refer to the length of a cricket pitch?!

Long term forecast is for a mild winter so maybe if we shovel the snow off the ice and implement one of the ACA considerations - stringing lights under the ice - there may be a chance of some surviving! Could we suggest that as a regular monthly club meeting activity do you think??

Not sure if the Onoway AFGA will keep the aerators going at Salters but I doubt it. There's a possibility that an interested lawyer who doesn't share ACA's concern re liability and Section 263 will personally take over responsibility for aerating Spring - hope to hear more about that soon.

Thanks for the update on Black Nugget, dWaYnE. Unfortunately, hungry and stupid may mean a death sentence for many tigers this winter.

Peter
