May 22 Meeting With Barry Phillips

Recommended Posts

Thx for the wonderful demo on the Reg Denny flies Barry. Top notch job with top notch results. I'm relatively certain they will all find a spot in my box.

I am especially looking forward to fishing that juicy and plump looking dragon...:) Now to find some packing foam....;)

Barry

Great job on the demo last night....thanks. Old flies that caught fish in the past will catch fish now and in the future.....not sure why we leave them behind other than to try new stuff. As I age I say to myself that the old stuff is better than the new stuff.

Thank you Barry for a great night of tying. Also thank you for having me tye along. I actually enjoyed doing it. That TU 84 I need a bit of work on the Rib. I enjoyed doing the Bear Hair Carey. It was fun had twisting the bear hair. I loved watching the Hatch Matcher. I've always enjoyed tying this fly. With Barry's explanation I will for sure have some in the fly box.

I agree with both Dan & Vince we get ourselves so wrapped up in all the new patterns and push these proven patterns to the side.

Again that is part of the reason for doing the Ray Bergman flies they all have a long & great past and it's nice to tye them and try them. I think it helps to get back to the roots of fly tying & fishing.

We should start a list of Alberta Fly Tyers New & Old that have created patterns that are being used or have been used.

I will start with Roman Sharbun Patterns SA Hopper, RS Quad

Dennis another trick that is helpful with the rib on the T.U. is leave a thread tag at the back so that you can twist the herl on the thread before wrapping, take care though as it is still very easy to break the herl if you twist too much.Take one wrap without twisting, then you can twist the thread and herl, this takes the stress away from the tie in point.

Another notable Alberta fly tier who merits addition to the list is Robert Cormier (co-author and illustrator of the excellent book "Mayflies"). Two of his contributions that come immediately to mind, since I always carry some in my fly box, are the Atomic Ant and his Green Drake Emerger.

Barry thanks for the tip. I like that idea. I know you mention that Reg was concerned to make sure all colors of the peacock eye was in the rib so I was thing of using a green rainbow glitter thread to twist with the peacock hurl.

That's what I mean we have tons of tyers that have created flies here in Alberta and it would be great to know who they are and their patterns.

Maybe start doing tributes to these people & their patterns.

I know of one guy that is a club member but he is a bit shy and he could maybe list a few of his creations Right Barry P. I completely for about the Mitchell Speacial.

LLoyed Shea did the Stauffer Speacial

Thats great lets keep the Names and patterns coming

I for sure would be up to doing something with these names & patterns.

Terry could you please post picture of these patterns. I think I've seen the Green Drake emerger but nto the atomic ant.

The other Co Author Melcom Knopp I bet has a couple if any one knows hopefully we can get a couple of his also.

Thank you guys keep bring them on.

I like the idea for reconizing and learning about how we got to where we are today in Alberta Fly Fishing.

Tight lines always.

Sure can. As it happens, I have a small collection of flies that were actually tied by Bob. There is an Atomic Ant in that grouping. As far as the Green Drake Emerger is concerned, I will do a photo of one that I have tied -- should be close enough. I should be able to get this done in the next few days. Terry

Barry you used the 9674 hook to tie the dragon. Do you know the new number of the hook that replaced it...?

Thx Mr Wolly

I think 9394 is a 2x heavy as well. Don't think I want that one.

Jim you want the R73,sizes 6 8 10 and 12 are most useful.
