FESA=Scratch Library=Gerry with a J :)

Yeah, them two (Jerry & Gerry) gotta wear name tags for the rest of the year. As do all the Dave's. :D

I spoke with Jerry after the meeting about getting the clubs library on-line... we're going to start work on that together in a few weeks after taking stock of what we have. First priority will be to get all the VHS media transferred over to DVD, including a large collection from Roman's estate.

WOW! Has it really been 12 years already since we've been a club... that Roman helped found, and not 10 as the cake read tonight? I had to go check.. and indeed it is... http://nlft.org/brokenthreads.php. To think I coulda been VP back then in 1998 but nominated instead Ian Kidd into the position. Meh, the club needed a newsletter editor at the time -- so I just filled in where I could really. A lot has changed in that time since I joined back in November 1995.

Anyways, here's to the future, I look forward to working with the membership and the executive -- again having past served the club before as webmaster and newsletter editor. Now, if only Federal elections went so smoothely next week eh? First new executive meeting is planned for when we're all down there together in Calgary at the Fly Fishing Symposium upcoming Feb 3 - 5th, or on the Monday after we get back.

Dennis, thank-you for all the work you've done for the CLUB since March 1998 -- over the past seven years -- http://nlft.org/newsletter/1998/NLFT_MAR98.pdf. Ditto for the past executive. Now you can all just sit back, drink Vince's underpriced coffee, and heckle with the rest from the "peanut gallery" at us. Enjoy!

Lance thank you.

1st I want to congradulate the new Exec. Next I want to thank every member in the club they made it enjoyable and their demands were not hard to fulfull.

As I said last night the club is getting way to big and its time to let someone with more time and energy to take over. The last couple of years has been hard to put in that 100% need. I thank Brian Bleckley for his endlish work and covered my backside at time and he did most of the running that need to be done.

Lance as the new VP and Scratch as the FESA rep. will bring new and innovative ideas and a new energy to the club.

Rick and Vince bring organization to club something that we have needed for some time.

Its good to see Ron back up there and he brings a little seasoning and balance to the Exec.

Gerry as Liberary will bring order and a system to the Liberary and will enable the club to enjoy the books that Roman's wife donated to the club.

Dave Robinson with the newletter has done a great job and will continue with his great input and ideas

Dave Murry all though not well work hard and has a heart for the club. (I will give Dave as much help as I can To make his job much easier as He has a large work load looking after keeping very one happy each week. I look forward working with him)

What can I say about Brian again I thank him for the last couple of year as he made Pres much easier for me. He has idea that will be good for the club and I look forward to help in any capacity he would like me to do.

Again the club is in great hands and I look forward in seeing it grow even bigger than it is

Northern Lights is a Fly Fishing Club to be Reconde with in Alberta.

Now lets go fishing guys

Guys

My congrats to the new members of the executive....who was that dude that kept nominating people...I'm not sure but I've heard he's one heck of a guy and i first class small stream fisherman. I look forward to working with all of you this coming year.

Dennis, as I said to you last night...many thanks for a job well done over many many years of service to an outstanding club. We were darn lucky to have you as President.

My father is not a well man and my plan is to be in Vancouver the weekend of the Calgary trip so if our first meeting is in Calgary then I won't be able to attend but if it's on the Monday the 6th then that would be better for me but I leave that in the groups hands.

RangerBob - one of my challanges is to get the group to start contributing a bit more change into the coffee fund...it may be underpriced but it sure beats the stuff thats sold in cans...so hey guys ....pony up.

Here's to a great year. See you all tomorrow night and on the weekend. The seminar is going to be first class.Frankly, I can't wait to learn more about small stream fishing from Ed and big river fishing from Jim. Going to be a great two man show.

It was my pleasure....I know your going to do an outstanding job.

If we can crank up the coffee fund I might be able to swing a small espresso machine. Ah, I can see it now...we will be the only club in the free world to have espresso...one can only dream.

George reported "Secretary= John M". As Dennis and Darren mentioned, yes, it's actually Ron Hagen keeping us in "check" in that position.

Did I hear correctly? That the club will soon have a charity number? If so, I can get the club a $200.00 Donation from where I work... I got one for my Archery club yesterday.

Let me know when this takes place.... I get $200.00 per year at any charitble club/organization I belong to.

Hey, you can all sign your cheques over from Ralphie to us if you want too -- really and that way Vince will get us a "Mr. Espresso" quicker.

ABH... I'm not in the loop on that one yet (if NLFTF qualifies for one or applied for it's own)... but I will check into that on Friday and get back to yah. I know we go into some fundraising activities with TUC from time to time on it's own account.

The FESA paperwork for re-applicatin was botched somehow I understand but it's being retooled as Brian mentioned at the last meeting. Becoming a member of NLFTF... means you are also a member of FESA... and $200 will buy them trouts a lotta bubbles. Hope that helps.

It's actually FESA that has applied for charitable status not NLFT&F

FESA (the Fisheries Enhancement Society of Alberta)

is already registered in Alberta as a Not for Profit Society (NFPS) (right Brian?)

NLFT&F is not currently registered in Alberta as an NFPS

We are not obligated by law to do so, and it may only be advantageous

if we decide to engage in certain types of fund aising activities

or want to pursue charitable status.

Charitable status is granted by two bodies

One is Alberta Gaming - for the purpose of \

1. receiving Community Facility Enhancement Program money,

2 for applying to volunteer for and obtain funds from Casinos

3 and for running fund raising activities such as raffles etc.

which FESA may or may not choose to pursue.

The other is Revenue Canada, which permits the Charity to

1 issue charitable donation receipts

2 avoid paying income tax on some accrued funds

3 avoid pauying the GST on some purchases

Both bodies (Alberta Gaming and the Feds) have a lot of BS to go through

You have to meet their requirements for the objectives of the charity

You have to file annual audited financial statements and tax returns

and you have to fill out a whole swack of forms.

For FESA, all this work may pay dividents in terms of fund raising

and tax exemptions which would go towards the fish.

For a small club like NLFT&F, if we can get by on our own financial resources

(and with the help of TU do a bit of fund raising under their gaming license)

It's not worth the bureaucracy to get charitable status or registered as a NFPS

I have been dealing with CRA (charities secretariat) for a number of months now and things are starting to line up. I hope to have some positive news on the charitable front in the next few weeks (or so) - things have to be right to get approved and it takes time.

FESA already received $36,000 from the province through the lotteries/community enhancements, but just about any Alberta club can get that kind of a grant for a good project.

Regards,

Tim

And a kind offer it was...

Don't let Tim's response put you off. Contrary to his sentiment - every dollar is valued.

I'll do my best to you get a number as soon as it's available.

Like I said $200 bucks buys a lotta bubbles for them Trout. Tim.. how much does it cost to run the areators for a month again. We all pitch in where we can... FESA watch.. donations, etc.

Richard, $200 is a generous offer indeed.. and when things are sorted out... I'm sure Tim or Scratch can get in touch with you and the info you need.

You coming out to the NLFTF meeting next week? Bring your vice! See you there!
