  1. Thanks to all those who attended to learn a ton of information on our wonderful sport of Fly Fishing. A special Thanks to those who travelled from Medicine Hat, Crowsnest, Calgary, Red Deer and Rocky Mountain House. A great 2 days. If you ever have the opportunity to hear either Mike or Gary speak, DON'T MISS IT.
  2. Shan: Does this mean your record went Platinum? I thought we didn't do 45's, 8 tracks, cassettes any longer and that todays standard is either CD's or I Pods. I personally prefer to use my name, as I can be in some contraversial topics and some people may say that I may be opinionated. At least if you have an issue with some comment that I make, you are able to deal with me directly. I just have issues with individuals who get into contraversial topics while hiding behind anonymous names and will only offer an opinion while on line. By the way Canada Grey used to be 6'2'' and 175 lbs. with long curly locks and a 6 pack body. Drove a Lamborgini, wintered in either Chile or New Zealand. Then I put my name onto the board and then had to eat crow for the Canada Grey description. Now I have speak either the truth or my personal opinion and be prepared to defend that opinion.
  3. Terry: I look forward to seeing you once again. Even if you had to add hotel costs this has to be the best Fly Fishing Value anywhere. 3 days away, I'm really looking forward to it.

Welcome Treecatcher: NLFT+TU is also more than tying flies. Learn about fly fishing techniques, gear and all aspects of Fly Fishing. Now being a Trout Unlimited Chapter, conservation completes the cycle. One of the biggest sins you can have in the club is NOT asking if you don't know something. We take pride in teaching this wonderful sport. Plus we have some great seminars. Don't miss this weekends annual seminar featuring Gary Borger and Mike Lawson. 2 full days of fly fishing expertise, we will all learn alot. Hope to see you soon.
  5. Do you really think it is cheaper in Calgary? My suggestion would be that if there is a difference, and I doubt that, Calgary would be more expensive. Now if you suggested that there may be a larger assortment, or a different manufacturer that may not be available here then I would agree. Given the number of shops there and not always wanting to carry the same SKU's as a competitor there may be more manufacturers products available. However if you want Marabou Olive as an example. Your choice in Edmonton may be only Superfly and in Calgary you may find Hook & Hackle or Wapsi etc. as well. Bottom line is, does it really matter. I think it does because Superfly is also an Edmonton based company that also supports us. I don't think the marabou is going to be any different and I don't think it will be any cheaper in Calgary. You may find clearances, ie: Russel closing or shops discontinuing products but that is selective on only a specific quantity and not on a regular basis. Every time that we purchase items out of town or on the internet etc. we further weaken our local shops. Then sooner or later they will notice a reduction in sales or turnover and start to reduce assortments, that will in fact start a very negative trend that will only get worse. Then if fly tying drops, then soon fly fishing gear will drop then that cycle will continue to a point where all of it may be gone. So that when you need some tippet or leaders to go fishing tomorrow and they don't carry them any more (Let alone your preferred brand). Remember you can either order on the Internet or drive to Calgary and have it shipped Overnight Air so that you will be ready to go fishing tomorrow. Besides who doesn't want an excuse to further talk about fly tying or fishing. Just another reason to shop locally.
  6. Keith: You should go to Calgary. Spend $80 in gas and don't get your discount. Oh, that's right you aren't a member so you don't get the discount. Every time we don't support our local shops we weaken their position in the market. Plus we should support those that support us.
  7. Visit the Canadian Fly Fisher website under Regional Reports and read Duane Radford's article on the Northern Lights Fly Tyers-Trout Unlimited Edmonton. For an outside view of what our club is about. You may be impressed. www.canflyfish.com/2009/RRAlbertaNorth.asp
  8. Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond our control Wednesday's meeting will not be a conservation meeting. In it's place we will have 2 separate events: 1) Dying Burlap or others being led by Dave Murray. If you want bring some Rit Dye and either burlap or some other materials. Containers and Rubber Gloves. 2) We will select a video to play for those not interested in the above.
  9. Both Bull Trout and Brook Trout are from the Char Family and both are Fall Spawners. Although Brook Trout are no longer stocked in flowing waters, all of the existing brookies were stocked years ago. Yes, they do create hybrids and I for one haven't really considered the Bull/Brook Hybrids when out fishing. I definately will now though. These would be great to get photos and advise SRD when you encounter them.
  10. 1 Slice of Pizza with anchovies should be enough.
  11. Field_ID_Guide_FINAL_3_2_2009_FOR_DISTRIBUTION__1_.pdf Field Indentification of Bull Trout Hybrids Do you know the difference? Have you ever caught a Bull/Brook Hybrid?
  12. Wooly: How do you know that braiding foot hair takes to long?
  13. Ouch, that ending hurt. Time to get
  14. Les: you are supposed to trim the hair!
  15. [Can you believe it? The unofficial club DRY FLY specialist tying a Pheasant Tail NYMPH.
  16. 40 tyers including ones from Red Deer, Medicine Hat and Canmore tied 13 flies along with the Star of Fly Tying the Anglers Art, Leroy Hyatt. Many new techniques were learned along with the humor and wit of Leroy. Enjoyed by all. Photo of part of the group. Leroy and the Prez. Dave Murray
  17. Leroy arrived this evening. Rick Lang picked him up at the airport and after a little hastle with immigration managed to get into the country. He was then taken over to Superfly for a quick visit. We then proceeded for a quick supper then over to the club. Along with Rick and Barry Wright we quickly put Leroy to work in assisting us in setting up the tables and chairs for the event. Rick then went to check Leroy into the hotel for some rest after a long travel day. We are ready for a special tying day tomorow with the Star of FLY TYING the ANGLERS ART
  18. 24 HOURS FROM NOW WE WILL BE PICKING UP LEROY AT THE AIRPORT THERE IS STILL A FEW TICKETS LEFT, IF YOU REQUIRE ONE PLEASE CALL ME TO CONFIRM @ 780-718-1428, AS THERE MAY NOT BE TICKETS AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR. 19. Mike Sullivan's presentation on the future of the North Saskatchewan River watershed was excellent. The long term future looks grim if we don't take steps to improve our water quality. The condition of some of the fish caused by bad water quality is to say the least discusting. The Algae Bloom on Lake Winnipeg is absolutely unbelievable. This just reinforces the justification of Trout Unlimited and it's efforts for Cold Water Conservation.
