  1. I was ( or in some sense still am) an Uncle at large. I was matched with David McCagherty when he was nine. The goal of the program is to provide a male role model for boys from father-absent homes, similar to Big Brothers. The program recommends you get together about weekly. Activities would include anything either of you enjoyed. David and I did tons of things together. I watch him play hockey up to midget and we went to Oiler games, both of us big Oiler fans. David played Community and school soccer, eventually moving on to senior mens where he and I played on the same team, which he even coached for a while. (You can sense where this is going) . We played pickup touch football in the park with his friends. We built a model airplane and I took him up in a Cessna a couple times. We went canoeing and attended music concerts. I taught him how to drive a stick shift and let him use my RX7 and keep an ey on our house once when we were in NZ. Significant events we shared were his university graduation, the birth of my daughter, his first marriage and divorce and second marriage, the deaths of his mom and my dad and his move to London Ontario for a great job, and far too many others things to mention. We did go fishing a few times, but he was into more active sports. We still keep in touch after almost 40 years. I hope to see him when he comes to The Island this summer. So in my opinion, anything you can do for the Uncles program would be very worthwhile. Its been wonderful for David and me.
  2. Merry Christmas to all the NLFT folks. Hope Santa was good to yoi. http://www.tundracomicsftp.com/comicspub/daily_tundra/daily/2017-12-25.jpg
  3. Both proposals sounds good to me, particularly the Dolberg one. In the past that lake has produced very large fish, but the increase in the bucket brigade, whove been known to show up with several kids and take their limits in addition to their own has degraded the fishery.
  4. Having attended the semiinars for several years and now, living in Victoria, have no access to such seminars, I strongly recommend that you continue holding them. 'Yes, you may have to get creative about getting presenters, but the information they provide to fly fishers, new and experienced, is invaluable. Regardless of the better weather i Victoria, there are few freshwater fishing opportunities in the area in January. For example, this year the Cowichan was inaccessible due to heavy snow and many local lakes were ice covered. The Victoria boat show doesn't happen for a month or more. Thus there's little opportunity to go fresh water fishing in January, Also, while ther is beach fishing in places, Saltwater fishing at this time of year has been sporadic, largely due to high winds and rough seas. I really miss the chance provided by the January Seminars of get together with fellow fly fishers and learn from knowledgable presenters. Travel to Edmonton is a bit too costly just to go for the semmars though. For Edmonton and area folfk, that's not the case. As far as details are concerned. I think two days with two presenters is a good format. Having one presenter flown in and one more local to Alberta and area is also a good idea, You may end up with duplication over the space of a year or three, but that shouldn't be a problem, as most presenters change their stuff over time, and sometimes its nice have a presenter whom you've seen often enough to develop a friendship with. A mink of fishing technique, fly tying travel.presentation is nota bd fromat either, It certainly whets your appetite adn gets teh juices flowing in a doldrums time of year. Unfortunately Victoria doesn't have the population to support such seminars, Otherwise I'd be lobbying the local clubs to take a hard look at the idea. My $0.25 worth. Dave
  5. Rod. Welcome back to The Island. Nanaimo's only an hour and a bit away from Victoria. (If Malahat traffic is light). So we should be able to get together now and again for a fish. Send me a pm with your new address, phone # and e-mail Dave
  6. Hope you guys have a great start to the fall season.
  7. Dennis: You might want to put a date in the post itself. * BTW: Wish I was there to help out. This sounds like a great idea. Where are you advertising? Cabellas, Fishin' Hole, Wholesale Sports? Possibly camping and boat sales places like Martin Equipment, Riverside, Totem Outdoors, Campers Village, etc You also might try the "events" section of community newspapers and the "coffee news" Dave
  8. Surprise and saddening. Lorne was a good guy and ran a nice shop. 52 is way too young.
  9. Unfortunately haters gotta hate and will vent in any public forum regardless. Ditto the PETA sycophants who simply don't understand the valid place angling has in our society and the human psyche, as well as those who have their own agenda and will plunk their soapbox down anywhere. Fortunately there were some on line commenters on the Journal article that tried facts to put things in perspective. As far as going forward is concerned, there needs to be a milt-pronged approach. Firstly ACA and Alberta Environment need to find a short term solution better than not aerating or the inadequate one tried last winter. Secondly, the specific clause in the law needs to be amended to allow a "due dilligence" defence. A criminal charge should not follow an unfortunate event where stupidity, obstinance or recklessness by the "victim" are the primary cause. In my view, anyone who ignores warning signs, crosses fences or other barriers, to approach what is clearly a dangerous situation does so at their own risk. Doing so would be like charging a building owner of a base jumper commits similar trespass to jump to their death from the roof.
  10. Good luck to all those working the Sportmans Show. The show and the learn to fly fish seminars are two of the things I miss the most from not being in Edmonton. The boat and fishing show in Victoria is a very pale imitation. Mostly deep water boats and gear stuff. No more than a handful of fly rods. To be expected in this salt water crazy area. Hope to catch up with the Haig Brown guys on a fly tying night next week. I finally have a Wednesday night free to attend. I miss their regular monthly meeting again tonight due to a conflict with a Victoria Philharmonc Choir performance. We're singing the Mozart requiem and a Hyden mass with a professional orchestra and some very very good soloists. Too much rehearsal time put in to miss the chance to sing, Oh well, I'll have to make do with the cherry trees in bloom and daffodils coming up in the front yard instead of NLFT meetings.
  11. Kristi: Patterns do depend on destination and target species. You do have excellent local assistance though. Talk to Rick Lang and Ross Chow. Both are saltwater experienced and good tyers. That said, you can't go wrong with a couple of universal patterns. No1 - Clouser minnow - Chatreuse over White with one strand of flash each side, epoxy head West coast # 6 3xl tied sparse and add strand of flash each side - also blue over white and purple over white Caribbean # 8 and #10 3xl tied heavier with flash and rubber legs - also orange and dark tan over white No 2 - Bucktail - Chartreuse and white with lots of flash, big epoxy head with yellow and black eyes West coast - #2 - 2" to 3" long with #2 stinger hook - troll 35 ft behind boat in prop wash Carribean - 2/0 - 4" to 6" long with stinger - use wire leader and stinger wire - Barracuda have sharp teeth!! Check out the Summer and Winter issues of Fly Tyer for shrimp , crab and surface patterns and coyote fur and clouser patterns Rick and Ross can fill you in on Tarpon Toads, Lefty's Deceiver, pink things etc Dave R
  12. Garry: I now live in Victoria. Would be interested in getting in touch. Drop me a personal message please.
  13. John: how did you like Prague? We. We're there two years ago & loved it. September 2016 we're doing a bike & boat trip on the Mosel &Saar. Was the wine any good?
  14. Dennis: is this pre-scouting for our trip when I get back to Edmonton next week?
  15. Hey, a new Dave to replace the departing one! New Dave, you will find this a great place to learn about fly fishing and make some new friends. I really miss my good buddies at NLFT. That said, I met some new ones at the fly tiying night with the Haig Brown Anglers here in Victoria Tuesday night. They are a very friendly and welcoming bunch. And as is usual with orgaizations driven by volunteer members, they are always looking for fresh blood to help out. Dennis would have had a ball, as we tied small wet fly patterns like the partridge and green and peacock and starling. I had a similar experience in New Zealand in 2000-01. Just goes to show that fly fishers are great people no matter where you find them. All is takes to fit in is a willingness to share ideas and experiences and offer to help out a bit.
  16. Very sad news indeed. Bob was a good friend and staunch Northern Lights Member. Many kids tied thier firsrt fly with Bob at our kids tying table. I'll never fish the Red Deer again without remembering "Bobber" and his geat sense of humour and his love of fly fishing and trying.
  17. Wet Flies and Soft Hackles Presenter Dennis Southwick Pattern Stewarts Black Spider Hook: #14 Dry Fly Thread: Brown Pearsall Silk Hackle: Starling Comment: Dennis wants this to be more of a learning session than a tying presentation. So come and listen to some sage advice on the history and utility of these older patterns and how and when to fish them. Bring your vices and be prepared to tie along.
